Transforming Sin to Merit
Teshuvah · Inner Spark · Return to God · Spiritual Renewal
“And Judah approached him.”
The Sefat Emet reads Judah’s approach as a model for how a person draws near to the Divine essence within.
In the Midrash: “My son, if you have become a guarantor…”
The Midrash frames Judah’s act as one of spiritual guarantee and responsibility.
Rashi explains: “You became a guarantor for your friend — this refers to the Holy One.”
Judah’s guarantee is interpreted as taking responsibility before God Himself.
As in the teaching: “They adjure him: be righteous.”
This refers to the soul’s oath before descending into the world.
For a person is guarantor for the soul — the king’s daughter — to return her to her Father in Heaven.
The Sefat Emet emphasizes that one’s task is to restore the soul to its original purity.
And even though it has become so stained by sin…
The soul may descend far, yet its essence remains recoverable.
Nevertheless, through repentance from the depths of the heart — “How shall I go up to my Father?”
True inner repentance restores the bond with the Divine.
Sins are transformed into merits, and it is said: “I am Joseph…”
Revelation occurs when one’s inner truth emerges, just as Joseph revealed himself to his brothers.
And even though one cannot truly understand how sin becomes merit…
The mechanism of transformation is beyond human comprehension.
It is only the power of the Actor within the acted-upon.
The Divine energy within creation enables this reversal.
Just as a person turns his heart to repentance, so too all his actions committed in sin are transformed.
Inner change produces retroactive change in spiritual impact.
And truly, Israel — being God’s portion and inheritance — even if he has sinned, remains Israel.
The essential holiness of Israel endures beneath all failings.
Therefore he can strengthen himself to draw near to the Divine power hidden within him.
Every Jew has access to an inner concealed divinity.
And regarding this it is said: “He approached him” — to his very essence.
Judah’s approach symbolizes approaching one’s deepest core.
And he said: “Please, my lord,” and we have written about this before.
This phrase reflects humility before the inner Divine Presence.
But the request must be solely for the sake of Heaven.
Intent determines whether the approach is authentic.
And this is the meaning of: “Let your servant speak.”
The servant’s plea represents the sincere desire to align oneself with God’s will.
For all the seeker desires is to draw his heart toward Heaven, to walk in the King’s way, and to utter words before the Master of all.
The goal is proper intention and alignment with the Divine path.
And when a person clarifies this intention in the truth of his heart…
Authenticity of motive is essential for spiritual repair.
Even if he has been so sullied by sin, he can find the opening of repentance.
The gate of return is always available when approached genuinely.
Summary: Judah’s approach models the journey of the soul returning to its divine source, revealing how sincere repentance transforms even sin into merit through the hidden Divine power within.
