Teshuvah reawakens the merit of the Avos
teshuvah · zechus Avos · Eliyahu · Matan Torah · deveykus
"Who opens a gate for those who knock in teshuvah" — my grandfather, of blessed memory, said that the Avos are called "those who knock in teshuvah," and these are words pleasant to hear.
Citing the Selichos phrase, the Sefas Emes brings his grandfather's teaching that the Avos are the original "knockers" at the gate of teshuvah.
For they are the first to be close to teshuvah, as is known.
The Avos stand nearest to the path of return; they pioneered it for all their descendants.
Now, the essence of teshuvah is to return and cling (lehisdabek) to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
True teshuvah is not merely remorse over sin but reattaching oneself in deveykus to Hashem.
As Chazal said: "(teshuvah reaches) up to the Throne of Glory" — "up to Hashem your God" (Hoshea 14:2).
The pasuk "return up to Hashem your God" shows that teshuvah must reach all the way up to the Divine, to the very Throne of Glory.
And the Avos are themselves the Merkavah (Divine chariot), upon whom the Shechinah rests, and every Jew must say, "When will my deeds reach the deeds of my fathers?" as it is stated in Tana d'Vei Eliyahu.
The Avos were a "chariot" carrying the Shechinah, and each of us is meant to long to make our deeds resemble theirs — that yearning is the heart of return.
And this is the essence of teshuvah.
Striving to align our lives with the Avos is the core of what teshuvah means.
And it is taught in Pirkei d'Rabbi Eliezer: Yisrael will not do complete teshuvah until Eliyahu comes, as it is said, "And he shall return the heart of the fathers to the children" (Malachi 3:24).
Complete teshuvah awaits Eliyahu HaNavi, whose mission is precisely to reconnect the hearts of the children to the Avos.
If so, this is the essence of teshuvah: when Yisrael will be set right so as to align their hearts with the heart of the Avos.
Full teshuvah is reached when our inner hearts are brought into harmony with the hearts of the Avos.
And it is taught in the Midrashim that the merit of the Avos (zechus Avos) has ceased, yet even so we always invoke the bris (covenant) of the Avos — see there.
Though Chazal say the "merit of the fathers" has run out, we nonetheless keep mentioning their covenant in our tefillos. The Sefas Emes will resolve this tension.
And this means that through teshuvah we are able to revive and reawaken the merit of the Avos.
Zechus Avos is not gone for good; our teshuvah can rekindle it anew.
For the essential meaning of zechus Avos is the clarifications and tikkunim that the Avos performed, illuminating and refining the world for all generations.
"Merit of the fathers" really refers to the spiritual refinements the Avos accomplished, which purified and lit up the world as a lasting legacy.
And when sins prevailed and the aforementioned light was extinguished, the merit of the Avos "ceased."
When sin overwhelms the world, that inherited light is darkened — and this is what "zechus Avos has ceased" really means.
But through teshuvah we reawaken those lights and tikkunim.
Our teshuvah relights the dimmed illumination of the Avos and reactivates their refinements.
And I subsequently found this stated explicitly in the Pesikta, that through teshuvah one merits the zechus Avos — see there, in the section "Shuvah Yisrael."
The Sefas Emes notes he found support for his idea openly stated in the Pesikta on the haftarah "Shuvah Yisrael."
And likewise the merit of receiving the Torah: when Hakadosh Baruch Hu said "I am Hashem your God" (Shemos 20:2), His Divinity took hold upon us for all generations.
At Sinai, Hashem's declaration "Anochi" implanted His sovereignty within us permanently, as an enduring inheritance.
It is only sins that separate.
That bond from Sinai never truly lapses; only our sins create a barrier that obscures it.
Therefore it is written "Return... up to Hashem your God" (Hoshea 14:2) — to return and reawaken the power of His Divinity that took hold upon us.
"Return up to Hashem your God" means to remove the barrier of sin and rekindle the Divine sovereignty that was fixed within us at Sinai.
For all the gifts that are given from Heaven are for all generations, as Chazal said: "From Heaven they gave, but they did not take back."
Heavenly gifts, once granted, are never rescinded — they remain available to every generation.
And so it is written: "Just as the rain comes down... so shall be My word..." (Yeshayahu 55:10-11).
Like rain that descends and does not return empty, Hashem's word that came down remains and accomplishes its purpose.
The meaning is that those very words still wait and await every Jew, that he should merit and set right his deeds and receive those utterances; and concerning this it is written: "Take words with you" (Hoshea 14:3).
The Divine "words" of Sinai still hover, waiting for each Jew to refine himself and receive them; "take words with you" means to reclaim through teshuvah those very utterances that are waiting for us.
Summary: The Avos are the original "knockers in teshuvah," and the essence of teshuvah is to return and cling to Hashem by aligning our hearts and deeds with theirs — completed only when Eliyahu "returns the heart of the fathers to the children." Although Chazal say zechus Avos has "ceased," this only means the light of their refinements was dimmed by sin; through teshuvah we reawaken those very lights and tikkunim, as the Pesikta states. So too the bond of "Anochi Hashem" from Sinai took hold upon us forever — only sins separate us from it. For every heavenly gift is permanent: Hashem's "words" still wait for each Jew to refine himself and receive them, which is the meaning of "Take words with you."
