Rejoicing in Torah reveals Hashem's glory
Simchas Torah · kavod · toras emes · nekudah chiyus · creation
In the liturgical formula "Blessed is our God, who created us for His glory."
The Sefas Emes examines the wording of the berachah praising Hashem for creating us "for His glory."
And one must scrutinize: was not everything created for His glory, as it is said, "all that the Holy One created... He created for His glory"?
The difficulty: if all of creation was made for Hashem's glory (Avos 6:11), why single out the Jew as created "for His glory"?
The matter is as Chazal said: "The entire world was created only to accompany this one."
Chazal teach (Berachos 6b) that the whole world exists only to serve and accompany the individual who serves Hashem.
For His glory comes about specifically through the Jewish person.
The glory of Hashem is revealed in the world precisely through the avodah of the Jew.
And the Jew increases the glory of Heaven by means of all created beings.
The Jew takes all of creation and uses it to magnify kvod Shomayim — drawing out the divine glory latent in everything.
And this is the meaning of "and He gave us a Torah of truth."
The Sefas Emes now turns to the next phrase of the berachah, "toras emes."
But is there a Torah of falsehood?
Why call it a "Torah of truth" — as if there were some alternative, false Torah?
But the matter is that the Torah is the life-force of all created beings, and there is nothing that does not contain a point of life-force (nekudah chiyus) from the holy Torah.
The Torah is the vitality animating all of creation; every single thing holds within it an inner point of life drawn from the holy Torah.
And a hint to this is what the Sages said: "Any falsehood that has no (kernel of) truth within it cannot endure."
Even a lie can only persist if it contains some grain of truth — proof that everything that exists is sustained by an inner point of truth, which is Torah.
It emerges that there are many garments (in which this truth is clothed).
The single point of Torah-truth is clothed and concealed within countless outer "garments" throughout creation.
But to Bnei Yisrael was given a "Torah of truth," as the Zohar says, that they cleave to the trunk of the tree.
Bnei Yisrael received the truth itself, undisguised; the Zohar describes them as attached to the very trunk of the tree — the core, not the periphery.
While the nations and the other creatures are in the branches, leaves, and husks. Look there.
The nations and the rest of creation connect only to the outer layers — branches, leaves, and shells — where the inner truth is heavily garbed and hidden.
Therefore, after Sukkos, in which life and completeness are given to all created beings.
Sukkos is the time when renewed vitality and wholeness are bestowed upon all of creation for the coming year.
Bnei Yisrael must rejoice in the Torah and show that everything was created for His glory.
On Simchas Torah, immediately after Sukkos, Bnei Yisrael rejoice with the Torah, demonstrating that all of creation exists for Hashem's glory.
And there is no "glory" other than Torah.
True kavod is the Torah itself (Avos 6:3) — so by rejoicing in the Torah, the Jew reveals the glory for which the entire world was created.
Summary: Though all of creation was made for Hashem's glory, that glory is revealed specifically through the Jew, who uses every created thing to magnify kvod Shomayim. The Torah is the inner point of life and truth concealed within everything — but Bnei Yisrael alone received it undisguised, cleaving to the "trunk of the tree," while the rest of creation touches only its outer branches and husks. After Sukkos bestows renewed life on all beings, Bnei Yisrael rejoice with the Torah on Simchas Torah, revealing that everything was created for Hashem's glory — for there is no glory other than Torah.
