Expanding the Torah's greatness through the Oral Torah
Oral Torah · mitzvos · chiddushim · expansion · future tense
שייך לעיל למאמר רצה הקב"ה לזכות כו' למען צדקו יגדיל תורה.
This connects to what was said above regarding the teaching "The Holy One wished to grant merit [to Yisrael]…", "for the sake of His righteousness He will make the Torah great."
The Sefas Emes returns to the Mishnah's statement that Hashem multiplied Torah and mitzvos to grant Yisrael merit, anchored in the pasuk "Hashem desired, for the sake of His righteousness, to make the Torah great and glorious."
דקשה דהול"ל הגדיל תורה.
For there is a difficulty: it should have said "He made the Torah great" [in the past tense].
If the verse describes the giving of the Torah, the past tense "higdil" would be expected; instead it uses the future "yagdil," which calls for explanation.
רק הפי' על כח תורה שבע"פ שבנ"י מוסיפין ומרחיבין כח התורה.
Rather, the meaning refers to the power of Torah she-be'al peh (the Oral Torah), through which Bnei Yisrael add to and expand the power of the Torah.
The future tense "yagdil" points to the Oral Torah — an ongoing process in which Yisrael, in every generation, keep enlarging and broadening the Torah through their own chiddushim and toil.
וע"י המצות ממשיכין אור התורה לכל המעשים.
And through the mitzvos they draw the light of the Torah into all deeds.
By performing the practical mitzvos, Bnei Yisrael channel the ohr ha-Torah into every physical act, spreading its holiness throughout the world.
לכן הרבה להם דייקא תורה ומצות להודיען איך להגדיל ולהרחיב כח התורה כנ"ל.
Therefore He specifically gave them abundant Torah and mitzvos — to teach them how to enlarge and expand the power of the Torah, as above.
The very abundance of Torah and mitzvos is itself the instruction: it equips Yisrael with the means to continually grow and widen the Torah's reach.
וזה יגדיל ויאדיר לשון עתיד כנ"ל:
And this is why "yagdil v'ya'adir (He will make great and glorious)" is in the future tense, as above.
The future tense fits precisely because the Torah's greatness is not a finished event but an ever-unfolding expansion accomplished through Bnei Yisrael across all generations.
Summary: The pasuk's future tense "yagdil v'ya'adir" (rather than the past "higdil") teaches that the Torah's greatness is an ongoing process: through the Oral Torah, Bnei Yisrael continually add to and expand the Torah, and through the practical mitzvos they draw its light into every physical deed. Hashem deliberately gave abundant Torah and mitzvos precisely to equip them to keep enlarging the Torah's power.
