Shemini Atzeres: inner unity and Torah above nature
Shemini Atzeres · achdus · Simchas Torah · Name Havayah · above nature
"On the eighth day there shall be an atzeres (assembly/restraint) for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).
The Sefas Emes begins with the verse establishing Shemini Atzeres as a day of "holding back" and gathering for Bnei Yisrael.
"Gather an assembly," as Rashi explains (atzeres as a language of detaining/gathering).
Rashi reads atzeres as Hashem asking Bnei Yisrael to linger and gather with Him one more day, like a king asking beloved guests to stay.
And it is a gift, that on this day the hearts of Bnei Yisrael are gathered together.
Shemini Atzeres is itself a present from Hashem: on it the hearts of all Yisrael are drawn into unity.
And consequently they merit Torah, as it is written: "Gather the people to Me, and I will let them hear My words" (Devarim 4:10).
Because the hearts are gathered, they become fit to receive Torah — for Torah is given precisely when the people are assembled as one before Hashem.
And not at every time can one come to this achdus (unity).
Such complete unity of hearts is not attainable at all times; it requires special preparation.
And through the mitzvos of sukkah and lulav, Bnei Yisrael become united.
The avodah of Sukkos — dwelling in the sukkah and taking the four species — is what forges this unity over the course of the festival.
And the meaning of "Gather to Me (hakhel li)" is a gathering that is for the sake of Heaven (l'shem Shomayim).
"To Me" signifies that the gathering must be purely for Hashem's sake, not for any ulterior purpose.
Therefore, when Bnei Yisrael fulfill the mitzvos of sukkah and lulav l'shem Shomayim, this ultimately endures and is fulfilled on Shemini Atzeres.
The unity built sincerely through the Sukkos mitzvos reaches its lasting culmination on Shemini Atzeres.
For regarding the wicked it is taught: it begins in unity (chibbur) and ends in separation (perud).
A gathering not for Heaven's sake — the way of the resha'im — may start in togetherness but inevitably falls apart into division.
And so it is written regarding Yaakov, that beforehand he had all the struggles (with Lavan, with Esav, with the angel).
Yaakov's life followed the opposite pattern: first came all the battles and hardships.
And afterward it is written of Esav, "and he went to a land [away from his brother]" (Bereishis 36:6), while of Yaakov it is written, "and Yaakov settled" (Bereishis 37:1) — his being gathered, and the gathering of his sons, saved him.
Yaakov's path ended in settled unity: Esav departed, while Yaakov dwelt in peace. His own ingathering and the unity of his children were his protection — the holy pattern of ending in togetherness.
And so it is with Bnei Yisrael: after the preceding days of this month (Tishrei), they arrive in the end at the true achdus.
Like Yaakov, Bnei Yisrael pass through the avodah of the earlier days of Tishrei and only at the close — on Shemini Atzeres — reach genuine, lasting unity.
"It shall be an atzeres for you (lachem)" — this is in their very essence (b'atzmusam).
The word "for you" indicates that on this day the holiness is absorbed into the very being of Bnei Yisrael themselves.
And so it is written, "and you shall be only joyful (ach sameach)" (Devarim 16:15), and Chazal expounded this to include the last Yom Tov (Shemini Atzeres). The meaning is that beforehand the simchah came by means of the lulav, etc., whereas now the simchah is in their penimius (inner being) — and this is through the Torah.
During Sukkos the joy was generated through external mitzvos like the lulav; on Shemini Atzeres the joy has been internalized, flowing now directly from the Torah within.
And it is brought in the holy Zohar that we have the custom to make Simchas Torah.
The Zohar notes the practice of rejoicing with the Torah on this day.
That is, Bnei Yisrael felt the illumination of the Torah coming to them on this day, and they instituted [Simchas Torah] on their own, and they intuited the will of their Father in Heaven.
The custom of Simchas Torah arose from below: sensing the Torah's light flooding them on this day, Bnei Yisrael established the celebration themselves, perfectly aligning with Hashem's hidden ratzon.
And this is the joy of the Torah, in which none have a portion except Bnei Yisrael.
This particular simchah of Torah belongs exclusively to the Jewish people.
And in the Midrash on "V'zos HaBerachah": "Many daughters have done valiantly, but you have surpassed them all (v'at alis al kulanah)" (Mishlei 31:29).
The Midrash applies the woman of valor's praise to the unique blessing of this parshah and day.
The explanation: "V'zos HaBerachah" is a special blessing that Moshe Rabbeinu drew down, which the earlier ones (the Avos) did not merit.
Moshe brought into the world a blessing of a higher order than even the Avos had reached.
And he said, "Hashem came from Sinai" (Devarim 33:2).
Moshe's blessing opens by invoking the revelation of Hashem at Sinai — the giving of the Torah.
For it is written, "I appeared [to the Avos as Kel Shakai], but by My Name Hashem (the Tetragrammaton) I did not make Myself known to them" (Shemos 6:3).
The Avos knew Hashem through the Name Kel Shakai, governing nature; the higher Name Havayah was not yet revealed to them.
For Moshe Rabbeinu drew down into the world the conduct of the Torah, which is called "aish das" (fiery law) — a mode of governance above nature.
Through the Torah, Moshe introduced a supernatural mode of Divine guidance — "aish das" — operating above the laws of nature.
And this is from the Name Havayah (the Tetragrammaton), blessed is He and blessed is His Name.
This supernatural guidance flows from the Name Havayah, which transcends the natural order.
And beforehand, the Avos drew down and established the way of nature.
The Avos had first prepared and rectified the natural order itself.
And this is the governance through the Name Kel, which encompasses the three worlds, and this governance is clothed by means of practical mitzvos (mitzvos maasiyos).
The Avos' natural mode of Divine conduct operates through the Name Kel and is garbed within physical, action-based mitzvos.
And it may be that this is hinted at in the Shalosh Regalim (three pilgrimage festivals), corresponding to the three Avos upon whom the world stands.
The three festivals may parallel the three Avos, the pillars upon which the world is established.
Therefore on Pesach (Chag HaMatzos), Shavuos, and Sukkos there are special mitzvos.
Each of the three Regalim carries its own particular physical mitzvah, fitting their connection to the Avos and the natural order.
Matzah, the Shtei HaLechem (two loaves), sukkah and lulav.
These are the action-mitzvos of the three festivals — each clothing the Divine guidance in a tangible deed.
But on Atzeres (Shemini Atzeres), the aspect of Moshe Rabbeinu, it is the conduct of the Torah, which is not by means of [physical] garbing.
Shemini Atzeres corresponds to Moshe's higher level: Torah-guidance that needs no physical mitzvah to clothe it.
And it is from the Name Havayah, blessed is He and blessed is His Name.
This unclothed Torah-guidance stems directly from the supernal Name Havayah.
And therefore it has relevance to none but "you" (lachem) — Bnei Yisrael alone.
Because this level transcends nature and physical garb, it pertains exclusively to Bnei Yisrael.
And in truth the Avos first had to rectify the lower worlds, and as it says, "you have surpassed them all (al kulanah)" — precisely.
The Avos' work of fixing the lower, natural worlds was the necessary foundation; only upon it could Moshe's higher blessing "surpass them all."
And so it is each year: after the three Regalim comes Shemini Atzeres, which the Midrash calls an "addition (tosefes)," from "You have added to the nation, O Hashem" (Yeshayahu 26:15); see there.
Every year Shemini Atzeres follows the cycle of the three festivals as a crowning "addition" — an extra, higher gift beyond them.
That is, an addition from above, beyond the governance of nature.
This "addition" is precisely the supernatural dimension of Divine guidance bestowed on this day.
And about this it is said, "Fortunate are you, Yisrael! A people saved by Hashem" (Devarim 33:29).
This praise from the end of V'zos HaBerachah speaks of the unique salvation that comes to Israel from Hashem Himself.
But surely all salvations are from Hashem?
The Sefas Emes asks: what is unique about Israel being "saved by Hashem," since every salvation ultimately comes from Him?
Rather, there are those who are saved through the natural mode of governance.
For the other nations, salvation comes by way of nature — through ordinary, hidden means.
But the salvation of Yisrael is from the Name Havayah, blessed is He, Himself.
Israel's salvation flows directly from Hashem's supernal Name, above nature — which is the special praise of "a people saved by Hashem," the very theme of Shemini Atzeres.
Summary: Shemini Atzeres is a gift in which the hearts of Bnei Yisrael, gathered l'shem Shomayim through the mitzvos of Sukkos, reach their true and lasting achdus — the holy pattern (like Yaakov) of ending in unity rather than, like the wicked, ending in separation. The earlier simchah of Sukkos came through external mitzvos like the lulav; now joy is internalized through the Torah itself, giving rise to Simchas Torah, which belongs to Bnei Yisrael alone. The three Regalim, with their physical mitzvos, correspond to the Avos and the Name Kel governing nature; Shemini Atzeres corresponds to Moshe Rabbeinu and the Torah's supernatural guidance ("aish das") from the Name Havayah — an "addition" above nature. This is why Israel is uniquely "a people saved by Hashem": their salvation flows directly from the supernal Name, above the natural order.
