Seeing Shabbos with Clarity
“In the verse: ‘They came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees.’”
The Sefat Emet begins by noting that this verse alludes to deep spiritual structures embedded in Israel’s formation.
“As is known regarding the structure of the Children of Israel.”
He refers to the traditional mystical arrangement of Israel’s spiritual components.
“The Patriarchs.”
The three founding figures form the root level of Israel’s spiritual order.
“And the twelve tribes.”
These represent the next level of differentiation within Israel’s spiritual identity.
“And the seventy souls.”
This corresponds to the seventy individuals who descended to Egypt, representing a further branching of spiritual structure.
“And the six hundred thousand.”
The fullness of Israel as it appeared in the Exodus.
“And when they were redeemed from Egypt, they were restored level by level to the state of the seventy and the twelve tribes, as mentioned.”
The redemption re‑aligned Israel with its original spiritual configuration.
“And they were attached to the root.”
They reconnected to their deepest spiritual source.
“Therefore it is written: ‘See that the Lord has given you the Sabbath.’”
This indicates that they perceived the gift of Shabbat directly and clearly.
“And it is a great elevation that they saw the Sabbath with their own eyes.”
Their spiritual clarity allowed an experiential vision of Shabbat’s holiness.
“And to this they hinted: that if Israel had kept the first Sabbath…”
The sages teach that a unique opportunity was present at that first Shabbat.
“Precisely the first.”
It was not merely chronologically first, but spiritually distinct.
“For it was on a higher level than our Sabbath.”
The primal Shabbat possessed a greater illumination than what we now experience.
“No nation or tongue would have held sway over them.”
Their spiritual protection would have been absolute.
“But Tosafot ask that this was not the first Sabbath; see there.”
Traditional commentary challenges the identification of this Shabbat as the true first.
“And it may be explained as referring to the primordial aspect of Shabbat, as above.”
The Sefat Emet resolves the difficulty by pointing to the inner, original dimension of Shabbat.
“And now, on Shabbat, protection is required, as in the phrase ‘He Who spreads a shelter of peace over us.’”
Today, Shabbat’s sanctity is veiled and must be guarded.
“But before Amalek came, it was in a state of revelation.”
Before Amalek’s attack, Shabbat’s holiness shone openly.
“And it may be said that the sages hinted in the Midrash, with the parable of the king and queen: one who intrudes between them is liable for death.”
The parable expresses the severity of disrupting the union between God (the King) and Shabbat (the Queen).
“To say that through Amalek’s interference, the wicked one disrupted the earlier aspect of Shabbat.”
Amalek’s spiritual attack targeted the primal radiance of Shabbat.
“Therefore: ‘I will surely blot out…’”
God’s decree to erase Amalek corresponds to Amalek’s attempt to corrupt the essence of Shabbat.
Summary: The Sefat Emet interprets the journey to Elim as symbolizing Israel’s restoration to its original spiritual structure. This restoration enabled a unique and elevated experience of Shabbat. Amalek’s intrusion disrupted this primal Shabbat illumination, explaining both the spiritual fall and the divine command to eradicate Amalek.
