Daily Renewal Preparing Torah

Beshalach · תרמ"ב (1881) · Essay 2

“In the verse: ‘And they shall gather the matter day by day… in order to test them, whether they will walk in My Torah.’”

The Sefat Emet begins by linking the daily gathering of manna to a divine test: whether Israel can live in continual responsiveness to the Torah.

“For the Torah is complete renewal.”

Torah is not static; its essence is constant spiritual renewal.

“For there is nothing new under the sun.”

Within the natural world, nothing truly new emerges.

“But the Torah is above the sun.”

Torah originates beyond the limits of the natural order and therefore embodies genuine newness.

“Yet it is written: He renews each day the work of Creation.”

Even within nature, a divine renewal occurs daily through God’s sustaining power.

“And we can find some degree of renewal even in this world.”

Traces of this divine renewal appear in the physical realm as well.

“Therefore it is written ‘there is nothing new.’”

This phrase implies that only partial, not absolute, renewal exists in the natural world.

“For it implies that there is at least some renewal.”

Even within the limitations of nature, a hint of newness can be discerned.

“And according to the degree that one elevates nature to its root…”

When a person lifts the natural world toward its divine source, its hidden renewal becomes perceptible.

“…and awakens a measure of renewal…”

Human spiritual effort can unlock this latent renewal.

“Then one merits afterward to receive the Torah.”

This awakened renewal prepares a person for the higher renewal of Torah itself.

“Therefore the Sages placed the blessings of Yotzer and Ma'ariv Aravim before the blessing of Ahavah.”

The liturgy mirrors this structure: first daily cosmic renewal, then divine love expressed through Torah.

“For this reflects the two forms of renewal mentioned above, as explained elsewhere.”

The prayers correspond to natural renewal and Torah renewal.

“And this ‘day by day’ is the daily renewal God brings each day, as stated above.”

The manna’s daily appearance symbolizes divine ongoing renewal.

“And this is a preparation for the Torah.”

Living in awareness of daily renewal opens the heart to receive Torah.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that daily divine renewal within nature serves as preparation for the higher spiritual renewal of Torah. By recognizing and uplifting the traces of renewal in the world, one becomes capable of receiving Torah’s complete newness.
