Becoming Vessels for Song
במדרש צריך אדם להזכיר קי"ס כו'.
“In the Midrash: A person must mention the splitting of the Sea, etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the teaching that one must recall the miracle of the Sea of Reeds.
יצ"מ קשה כו'.
“The exodus from Egypt was difficult, etc.”
The redemption was arduous and demanded deep refinement.
ולמה קרע להם הים כו'.
“And why was the sea split for them, etc.?”
The miracle is questioned to reveal its inner purpose.
האמינו ואמרו שירה.
“They believed and sang the song.”
Their faith opened the path for song—the true culmination of deliverance.
כן צריך אדם לטהר לבו קודם שיתפלל כו'.
“So too a person must purify his heart before he prays, etc.”
Just as the Israelites reached song only after inner purification, so must each person prepare inwardly before prayer.
הענין הוא דכ' אז ישיר משמע שאז נגמר עיקר המכוון של הגאולה.
“The matter is that the verse says ‘Then they sang,’ implying that only then was the essential purpose of the redemption completed.”
The moment of song marks the fulfillment of the exodus’s goal.
כי העיקר הי' שנבראו בנ"י להעיד על הבורא ית' כמ"ש עם זו יצרתי לי תהלתי יספרו.
“For the main purpose was that Israel was created to testify to the Creator, as it is written: ‘This people I formed for Myself, they will recount My praise.’”
Israel’s essence is to proclaim God’s praise; redemption enables this mission.
וע"י הגלות במצרים נזדככו בכור הברזל להיות כלים לשיר ולזמר לפניו ית'.
“And through the exile in Egypt they were refined in the iron furnace to become vessels fit to sing before Him.”
Exile purified them, shaping them into instruments of divine song.
לכן כשנגמר הגאולה נפתח פיהם ואמרו שירה.
“Therefore, when the redemption was completed, their mouths opened and they sang.”
The ability to sing emerges naturally once the refinement is complete.
ולכן האמינו.
“And therefore they believed.”
The completion of their inner transformation enabled true faith.
כי כשיצאו ממצרים מ"מ לא הבינו מה יתרון נעשה ע"י הגלות.
“For when they left Egypt, they still did not understand what benefit the exile had produced.”
They perceived redemption, but not yet its inner gains.
ואח"כ הבינו שנעשו כלים.
“But afterward they understood that they had become vessels.”
Only later did they grasp how exile had prepared them spiritually.
כמ"ש במד' יונתי בחגוי הסלע כו' השמיעיני את קולך.
“As the Midrash says on the verse ‘My dove in the clefts of the rock… let Me hear your voice.’”
The hiddenness of exile is meant to awaken a more authentic voice.
שכל מה שהי' בחגוי ובסתר המדרגה הכל להוציא מכח אל הפועל להשמיע קולם.
“For everything that took place in the concealment and hiddenness was in order to bring forth their potential and make their voice heard.”
All obscurity serves to reveal latent spiritual power.
ומעין זה יש בכל יום שצריך אדם לתקן מדי יום ביומו כל מה שיצרו מתגבר עליו בכל יום לקיים יונתי בחגוי כו'.
“And there is something similar every day: a person must daily rectify whatever his inclination overpowers him with, fulfilling ‘My dove in the clefts,’ etc.”
Daily spiritual struggle mirrors the exile-refinement dynamic.
ואחר כך כשזוכה לטהר לבו יכול לקרות ק"ש ולהתפלל.
“And afterward, when he merits to purify his heart, he can recite the Shema and pray.”
Purification leads to genuine prayer and divine connection.
The Sefat Emet teaches that exile refines the soul into a vessel for divine song, and that each day a person reenacts this process through inner struggle, purification, and prayer.
