Body Sustained by Torah
“Concerning the section of the manna.”
The Sefat Emet introduces his teaching on the manna in the wilderness.
“Behold, I will rain down for you bread from heaven … in order that I may test them …”
The verse frames the manna as both sustenance and a spiritual test.
The Alshich writes that just as the soul receives vitality through the body’s food due to the soul’s connection to the body…
The Alshich teaches that physical nourishment affects the soul because of their deep interrelationship.
So too, we may understand that the body can be sustained by the soul’s nourishment, through that same mutual connection.
Just as the soul draws life from bodily food, the body can draw life from spiritual nourishment.
And indeed this is so, according to the level of the person.
This dynamic depends on the spiritual state of each individual.
When the body is subordinate to the soul, it is automatically sustained by the soul’s nourishment.
When a person lives with spiritual priority, even the physical self is nourished spiritually.
As the Sages wrote: The early pietists made their Torah fixed and their labor incidental—and both were sustained.
Prioritizing Torah allowed their material needs to be met naturally.
For the truth is that the soul is primary.
All true vitality flows from the inner spiritual core.
And the body’s endurance follows automatically.
Physical life becomes a byproduct of spiritual alignment.
But this must also be the person’s own intention.
One must consciously choose to make the soul primary.
And this is what is meant by “to test them, whether they will walk in My Torah.”
The test is whether people will truly live with Torah as their essential nourishment.
That the primary form of existence should come through the Torah.
Living by Torah creates the foundation for all life.
The bread from heaven is the nourishment of Torah.
The manna symbolizes spiritual sustenance manifesting physically.
And so it is written: “Which a person shall do, and live by them.”
Torah is described as the source of true life.
For everything depends upon it.
Spiritual vitality determines all aspects of existence.
If one knows and believes that Torah and mitzvot are our life and the length of our days…
Faith in the Torah’s life‑giving nature is essential.
…then one can live through Torah and mitzvot even in this world.
Spiritual commitment sustains a person physically even here and now.
As it is written: “It is a Tree of Life to those who hold fast to it.”
Torah is the true source of ongoing life for those who cling to it.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that just as the soul can draw life from the body, the body can be sustained by spiritual nourishment when a person makes the soul primary. The manna reveals this truth: Torah is the real sustenance, and physical life follows from spiritual alignment.
