Shabbos and Yisrael as soul of Creation

In the Gemara: Shabbos was given in private (b'tzin'a).

The Gemara (Beitzah 16a) teaches that the special gift of Shabbos was given to Bnei Yisrael discreetly, not openly to the nations.

"It is a sign between Me and the Bnei Yisrael" (Shemos 31:17).

Shabbos is a private sign of the bond between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael alone.

If so [that it is a private sign], the nations of the world should not be punished concerning it.

The Gemara reasons that since Shabbos was given privately as Yisrael's own sign, the umos ha'olam cannot be held liable for failing to keep it.

Shabbos itself was revealed to them, but the extra soul (neshamah yeseirah) was not made known to them.

The resolution: the day of Shabbos is known to all, but the inner gift of the neshamah yeseirah — the additional soul of Shabbos — was concealed from the nations.

And what is the matter of the neshamah yeseirah?

The Sefas Emes now asks what this "extra soul" of Shabbos really is.

For it is taught: Shabbos said [before Hashem], "To everyone You have given a partner, but to me there is no partner."

The Midrash relates that the six days of the week were paired off with one another, leaving Shabbos seemingly without a counterpart.

The Holy One said to it: Knesses Yisrael shall be your partner.

Hashem answered that Bnei Yisrael — Knesses Yisrael — would be the partner of Shabbos.

The explanation: the weekdays (yemei ha'ma'aseh) are the power of Ma'aseh Bereishis (the work of Creation).

The six working days each carry the creative force of the acts of Creation that took place on them.

As it is taught: there is no blade of grass that does not have a mazal in the heavens that strikes it and says to it, "Grow!"

Every created thing has a corresponding spiritual force above that channels life into it and drives its growth.

It emerges, then, that the created beings receive from those days, which are supernal illuminations.

The weekdays are themselves channels of supernal light, and all creatures draw their sustenance from them.

And since they [the weekdays] bestow upon the recipients, an additional power is added to them in the heavens.

Because each weekday gives forth to those who receive from it, that giving in turn increases its own power above — the giver is strengthened by giving.

And this is the meaning of "each one has a partner."

This is why each weekday is said to have a "partner" — the creatures that receive from it are its counterpart, completing its purpose.

But on Shabbos there was no creation, for on it He rested.

Shabbos stands apart, since no act of creation occurred on it — it is the day of rest.

Therefore it has no partner, for the created beings do not receive from the illumination of the day of Shabbos, since no creation took place on it.

Because nothing was created on Shabbos, ordinary creatures have no counterpart drawing directly from its light — hence its complaint that it lacks a partner.

For Shabbos is the neshamah (soul) of the weekdays.

Shabbos is not on the same plane as the weekdays at all; it is their inner soul, the source of life that animates them.

Only Bnei Yisrael, who are likewise the soul of the Creation — for all of Creation depends upon them —

Bnei Yisrael occupy a parallel role: they too are the inner soul of all Creation, since the entire world exists for their sake and rests upon them.

— and they awaken the vitality of all created beings; therefore it is they who receive from the illumination of Shabbos.

Just as Shabbos enlivens the weekdays, Bnei Yisrael awaken the chiyus within all creatures; being on Shabbos's own spiritual plane, they alone can receive its light.

It emerges, then, that Shabbos bestows upon Bnei Yisrael; and therefore an additional soul is added to Shabbos as well.

Since Shabbos now has Bnei Yisrael as recipients of its light, the same principle applies — by giving, Shabbos itself gains an added soul, just as the weekdays gained power by giving.

And it is called neshamah yeseirah, like a "soul to the soul." Understand this.

This added soul is the neshamah yeseirah — a "soul of the soul," for Shabbos (already the soul of the week) receives an even higher soul through its partnership with Bnei Yisrael.

Summary: Each weekday carries the creative light of Ma'aseh Bereishis and is paired with the creatures who receive from it; by giving, each gains added power. Shabbos, on which nothing was created, is not a day among days but the very soul of the week, and so seems to lack a partner. Hashem pairs it with Knesses Yisrael — who are likewise the soul of Creation and alone can receive Shabbos's light. Through giving to them, Shabbos itself gains an added soul: the neshamah yeseirah, a "soul to the soul."
