Scattered yet united: the deeper power of Purim

And all of Haman's power lay in this — that he said: "a people... scattered and dispersed (mefuzar u'meforad)."

Haman's entire strategy rested on his claim that the Jews were "scattered and dispersed" — fragmented and therefore vulnerable.

In truth the scattering (pizur) is for the good — to publicize Hashem's Name in all places and to extract the nitzotzos kedoshos (holy sparks) that are found everywhere.

Being spread across the world is actually a positive mission: wherever Jews are dispersed, they proclaim Hashem's Name and gather up the holy sparks hidden in every place.

As it is written: "the righteous acts of His dispersal (pirzono) in Yisrael."

The pasuk itself frames the dispersion of Yisrael as an act of Hashem's righteousness, accomplishing a positive purpose.

But "meforad" (dispersed/divided) is the deficiency — for Bnei Yisrael must be one bound bundle (agudah achas) even though they are scattered.

The real danger is not the scattering but the inner division: Jews must remain united as one bundle even while physically spread out.

As it is written, that they are called "seventy souls (nefesh)" in the singular.

The Torah calls the seventy who came to Mitzrayim a single "nefesh," teaching that Bnei Yisrael are essentially one unified entity.

And when the unity (achdus) is taken away through the scattering, that is the full force of galus.

Galus reaches its true severity only when dispersion fractures Jewish unity; the scattering itself is not the curse — the loss of oneness is.

Therefore after the salvation they gathered together in their cities and instituted mishloach manos and matanos (la'evyonim).

In response, the Purim salvation was sealed by re-gathering and by the mitzvos of sending portions and gifts — acts that rebuild unity.

So as to be one bound bundle.

The purpose of these mitzvos is to reforge Bnei Yisrael into a single united bundle.

And the one rich in Torah should give also to the poor one.

This sharing applies spiritually too: whoever is wealthy in Torah must share it with one who lacks.

And likewise talmidei chachamim should receive one from another.

Even Torah scholars must remain open to receiving wisdom from one another, not standing apart in isolation.

As they hinted in the Gemara: "this master sent him something sharp (churfa), and he sent back something sweet (chulya)."

The Gemara pictures two scholars exchanging gifts — one sharp, one sweet — symbolizing how each shares his distinctive Torah strength with the other.

For every talmid chacham has something unique, and each one must receive from his fellow in order to be one bound bundle.

Each scholar possesses a singular gift in Torah; only by giving and receiving from one another do they become the unified "agudah achas."

Summary: Haman's power lay in calling the Jews "scattered and dispersed." But the scattering (pizur) is actually good — it spreads Hashem's Name and gathers holy sparks everywhere; the real flaw is being "meforad," divided, for Bnei Yisrael must remain one bundle even while scattered. Galus is the loss of that unity, so the Purim salvation was answered with mishloach manos and matanos la'evyonim. The same principle applies in Torah: the wealthy share with the poor, and even talmidei chachamim must give and receive one another's unique strengths to become one bound bundle.
