Yisro Seeking Truth in Darkness

במדרש לץ תכה ופתי יערים.

“In the Midrash: ‘Strike the scoffer, and the simple one will become wise.’”

The Sefat Emet opens by citing the Midrash, which applies this verse to spiritual distinctions revealed during the Exodus.

כי בנ"י נבראו לתקן כל הברואים.

For the Children of Israel were created to repair all beings.

Israel’s role is universal: their spiritual work elevates the entire creation.

מכיון שנבחרו מכל האומות בוודאי בכחם לרומם כולם.

Since they were chosen from all nations, they surely possess the power to uplift them all.

Election implies capacity—being chosen equips Israel to raise others spiritually.

לכן כ' ה' עוזי ומעוזי כו' אליך גוים יבאו כו'.

Therefore it is written: “Lord, my strength and stronghold… to You nations shall come.”

Israel’s spiritual strength becomes a magnet drawing the nations toward God.

שכל העוז ותעצומות שנתן הש"י לבנ"י הם מטיבין לכל ומקרבים מי שרוצה להתקרב.

For all the might that God gave Israel benefits everyone and brings near whoever desires closeness.

The divine gifts to Israel are not exclusive; they radiate outward to any seeker.

וקראו פתי יערים על יתרו.

And the verse calls “the simple one will become wise” regarding Jethro.

Jethro exemplifies the sincere seeker who becomes enlightened.

אם כי הי' חכם שבאומות.

Even though he was the wisest among the nations.

His prior wisdom did not grant him access to ultimate truth.

אכן היא הנותנת.

Indeed, this itself explains the matter.

His genuine wisdom enabled him to pursue truth once it became available.

שזה הי' ההפרש בין יתרו לעמלק ימ"ש.

This was the difference between Jethro and Amalek.

Both encountered Israel’s revelation, but reacted oppositely.

שיתרו הלך בחכמה וביקש האמת.

For Jethro followed wisdom and sought truth.

His motivation was honest inquiry.

רק שעוה"ז הוא בחושך.

But this world is in darkness.

The natural state of the world obscures true spiritual understanding.

וא"י להשיג האמת.

And one cannot grasp the truth.

Without divine illumination, the truth remains hidden.

זולת לבנ"י ע"י תורה אור ונר מצוה.

Except through Israel, by means of Torah as light and mitzvah as a lamp.

The Torah provides the light that cuts through worldly darkness.

וכשהמשיכו בנ"י הארת האמת.

And when Israel drew forth the radiance of truth.

The Exodus and Sinai revealed divine truth into the world.

שמע יתרו והודה להאמת שראה שטעה מקודם.

Jethro heard and acknowledged the truth, seeing that he had previously erred.

He responded by correcting himself, embracing the newfound clarity.

והי' ע"ז של יתרו מקודם מחסרון חכמה אמתיות.

And Jethro’s prior idolatry came from a lack of true wisdom.

His mistakes were due to ignorance, not arrogance.

ועמלק ימ"ש נק' לץ.

But Amalek is called a scoffer.

Amalek’s defining trait is scorn, not sincerity.

שע"ז נאמר זד יהיר לץ שמו עושה בעברת זדון.

Of whom it is said: “The arrogant one, the scoffer is his name, acting in arrogant wrath.”

Amalek acts with intentional rebellion, not ignorance.

פי' לץ הוא היודע האמת ועובר במזיד.

A scoffer is one who knows the truth and transgresses deliberately.

His sin is willful defiance of known reality.

וידע כי בנ"י הם אצל האמת ובא ולחם עמהם.

And he knew that Israel possessed the truth and yet came to fight them.

This is Amalek’s root evil: conscious war against truth.

לכן נאבד שמו וזכרו.

Therefore his name and memory were erased.

Such deliberate opposition cannot endure.

והכלל שבעת יצ"מ ונתינת התורה נתברר האמת.

And the principle is that at the Exodus and the giving of the Torah, the truth was clarified.

Those events revealed God unmistakably.

וממילא מי שהי' ראוי להתקרב נמשך אחר בנ"י והפסולת נכלה.

And consequently, whoever was fit to draw near followed Israel, and the refuse was destroyed.

The revelation naturally separated sincere seekers from willful opponents.

Summary: The Sefat Emet contrasts Jethro, whose sincere search for truth was fulfilled through Israel’s revelation, with Amalek, who knowingly opposed truth. The Exodus illuminated reality, drawing near all who were worthy and eliminating those defined by deliberate scorn.
