Shabbos Completing Unfinished Labor
“In Rashi: ‘And you shall do all your work.’”
The Sefat Emet cites Rashi, who comments on the command to relate to Shabbat as though all one’s work were already completed.
“That it should be as though all your labor is already done.”
This mindset allows a person to enter Shabbat with inner completeness.
“And through this faith, she (Shabbat) can bestow compassion.”
Belief in Shabbat’s completeness enables Shabbat to act with merciful influence upon a person.
“And Shabbat grants wholeness to all things that submit themselves to Shabbat.”
Anything that aligns with Shabbat’s sanctity receives its full measure of completion and peace.
“Therefore it is called ‘Shabbat Shalom,’ reflecting the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, who is called Peace.”
Shabbat mirrors the divine attribute of peace and perfection.
“Because He is the One who grants completeness to all.”
Shabbat channels this divine power of perfecting creation.
“And Shabbat is the root of all creation, and above, in the supernal worlds, Shabbat exists from the days of Creation; only Israel merited to draw the sanctity of Shabbat into this world.”
Shabbat is primordial, but Israel uniquely channels its holiness downward into earthly life.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Remember the day of Shabbat to sanctify it.’”
Memory serves as the vessel through which Shabbat’s holiness enters the world.
“But is not the sanctity of Shabbat greater than the level of a human being?”
The Sefat Emet asks how humans can add sanctity to something inherently superior to them.
“So what is this sanctity that a person gives through remembering Shabbat?”
The act of remembering seems insufficient to affect Shabbat’s transcendent holiness.
“Only to draw Shabbat into this world.”
Human remembrance creates a conduit for Shabbat to manifest below.
“And this is the testimony that Israel and Shabbat testify about one another.”
Israel reveals Shabbat in the world; Shabbat reveals Israel’s spiritual identity.
“And this is the reason it is written in the second Tablets.”
The Sefat Emet transitions to the second version of the Ten Commandments.
“‘And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt…’”
The command to remember the Exodus is linked to the command of Shabbat.
“For each (Shabbat) is a remembrance of the Exodus.”
Shabbat continuously recalls liberation, without which Shabbat-light could not be received.
“As explained above: without the Exodus, this world would not have had the capacity to receive the radiance of Shabbat.”
The Exodus elevated creation, enabling it to hold Shabbat’s spiritual illumination.
“Thus it says: ‘Therefore Hashem has commanded you…’”
The command arises from Israel’s new spiritual capacity gained through redemption.
“That the Children of Israel were brought close to the level of Shabbat.”
Redemption aligns Israel with Shabbat’s essence.
“As it is said: ‘He spreads over us a sukkah of peace…’”
Shabbat envelops Israel in divine peace and protection.
“Therefore one must set everything aside when Shabbat arrives, for it is the root of all, and then the sukkah of peace rests upon them, and nothing is lacking for those who fear Him.”
Letting go in honor of Shabbat allows its divine wholeness to settle upon a person completely.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat is the primordial root of creation, and Israel’s role is to draw its transcendent holiness into this world through remembrance and faith. Shabbat grants peace, completeness, and divine compassion, a gift made possible only through the Exodus. By releasing worldly concerns, one becomes a vessel for Shabbat’s all-encompassing wholeness.
