Shabbos and Yisrael as hidden root of blessing

Shabbos · Bnei Yisrael · hidden blessing · segulah · partnership

On the passuk: "Remember the day of Shabbos."

The Sefas Emes opens on the commandment "Zachor es yom haShabbos" and will explore the deep bond between Shabbos and Bnei Yisrael.

And it is brought: Shabbos said [before Hashem], "To everyone You have given a partner…"

The Midrash records that Shabbos complained that every other day of the week was paired off with another, but Shabbos itself was left without a mate.

Hashem answered: Knesses Yisrael (the assembly of Israel) shall be your partner.

Hashem responded that Knesses Yisrael — the collective soul of Bnei Yisrael — would be the partner of Shabbos, establishing an essential bond between the two.

The matter is according to what is written in the Zohar on "And He blessed… the seventh day": since no food is found in it [Shabbos itself produced none, as the mann did not fall], what blessing is found in it? Rather, all blessings depend upon the seventh.

The Zohar asks: what is the "blessing" of the seventh day, given that no new sustenance (such as the mann) was created on it? The answer: Shabbos is the hidden source upon which all the week's blessings depend — it does not display blessing openly, yet it is the wellspring of all blessing.

And this is the meaning of "He blessed… and sanctified it."

The Torah's pairing of "blessed" and "sanctified" indicates that the blessing of Shabbos is of a higher, holy order — not manifest abundance but the sanctified root of abundance.

For the blessing of Shabbos is above, in holiness.

The brachah of Shabbos resides in the upper, hidden realm of kedushah rather than in revealed, material form.

And it is the root of all the blessings.

Shabbos is the source from which every blessing of the six weekdays flows.

And this blessing — none can receive it except Bnei Yisrael, who became vessels to receive this blessing at the giving of the Torah.

Such a concealed, supernal blessing requires a fitting vessel; only Bnei Yisrael, through Kabbalas HaTorah, became the keilim (vessels) capable of receiving it.

And this is the meaning of "Hashem will give strength to His people," and through this "Hashem will bless His people with peace."

Citing Tehillim (29:11), the "strength" Hashem gives His people is the Torah, which makes them the vessel; and through becoming that vessel they receive the blessing of shalom — the root-blessing of Shabbos.

For it [peace/the people] is the vessel that holds the aforementioned blessing.

Chazal teach that shalom is the vessel that contains blessing; Bnei Yisrael, unified in peace, are precisely the keli that holds the supernal blessing of Shabbos.

And Bnei Yisrael themselves are like the aspect of Shabbos described above.

Here is the heart of the parallel: Bnei Yisrael share the very nature of Shabbos — both are the hidden root of blessing, not the open display of it. This is why they are fitting partners.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael, who were chosen from among all the peoples to be His treasure (segulah).

Bnei Yisrael were singled out as Hashem's treasured nation — yet, as with Shabbos, this chosenness is hidden rather than outwardly evident.

They are, in this world, lowlier than all of them.

Paradoxically, in olam hazeh Bnei Yisrael appear the lowliest of nations, their true greatness concealed.

Especially in galus.

This concealment is most acute in exile, where the chosen people seem most downtrodden.

And just as Shabbos is the root of all blessings, yet no sustenance is found in it in a revealed way.

The Sefas Emes draws the comparison tight: Shabbos is the source of all blessing precisely while showing no open sustenance.

So too Bnei Yisrael receive the root of all blessings.

Likewise, Bnei Yisrael are the recipients of the root of all blessing for the entire world.

And in a spiritual way, not in a revealed way.

But that blessing rests on them spiritually and hidden, not in visible, material form — exactly mirroring Shabbos.

And this is the meaning of "like an apple tree among the trees of the forest… in its shade I delighted… and its fruit was sweet to my palate."

Citing Shir HaShirim (2:3), Bnei Yisrael are compared to an apple tree among forest trees — and the Sefas Emes will use the Midrash on this verse to illustrate the hidden nature of their blessing.

And we have already written the Midrash of Chazal: just as the apple tree has [little] shade… so too Bnei Yisrael — "in its shade I delighted," even though its shade is not apparent in this world.

The Midrash notes that the apple tree gives scant shade, so others flee it; yet "in its shade I delighted" — Bnei Yisrael took shelter under Hashem at Sinai even though their protective "shade" is not visible in this world. Their security in Hashem is real though concealed.

So too, "its fruit is sweet to my palate" — specifically.

The fruit's sweetness is perceived only by the "palate" — only to one who actually tastes it — emphasizing that the blessing is an inner experience, not an outward show.

And everyone wonders: what blessing is found for Bnei Yisrael?

To the outside observer Bnei Yisrael seem to possess no special blessing at all — just as one might ask what blessing Shabbos contains.

But "the palate tastes its food."

Citing Iyov (34:3), only the palate can taste — meaning that the hidden blessing is detected only by the inner faculty attuned to it.

Just as the body in general receives the food, while the palate receives the taste and the refined essence of the food.

The Sefas Emes offers an analogy: the whole body is nourished by food, but only the palate perceives its taste and its subtle, refined dimension.

So too within the world as a whole.

The same structure exists in creation at large: the world is like a body, and within it one organ perceives the inner "taste."

Bnei Yisrael are the mouth and palate, and they discern and know how to sense this taste; this is "its fruit is sweet to my palate."

Bnei Yisrael are the "palate" of the world — the part able to taste the inner sweetness, the penimiyus, of creation. They alone perceive the hidden blessing, which is "sweet to my palate."

And all this Hashem bequeathed to us, to be for Him a people of inheritance.

This capacity to taste the inner blessing is the inheritance Hashem gave Bnei Yisrael, making them His own nachalah (inheritance).

And this is the meaning of "I am Hashem your God, who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim."

The Sefas Emes now addresses why the first of the Aseres HaDibros identifies Hashem as the One who took us out of Egypt.

And they ask: why is it not written "who created you"?

The classic question: why does Hashem introduce Himself by the Exodus rather than by creating heaven and earth, which would seem the greater statement?

But in truth, in this world Bnei Yisrael have no fixed place.

The answer flows from the whole theme: because their essence is hidden and supernal, Bnei Yisrael have no permanent, settled standing in this material world.

And therefore "we were slaves in Mitzrayim…"

This rootlessness is why they began as slaves in a land not their own.

For this is not our place.

This world is fundamentally not the true "place" of Bnei Yisrael.

And every nation has its place.

The other nations belong naturally to the physical world and each has its own land and station within it.

But Bnei Yisrael — their place is above nature, time, and space.

Bnei Yisrael, by contrast, belong to a realm beyond teva, beyond time and place altogether — like Shabbos, which transcends the ordinary order.

Therefore, in truth, when the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed and we were exiled from our land.

When the Mikdash fell and Bnei Yisrael went into galus, they lost their foothold in the world below.

We have no [independent] existence in this world.

In exile Bnei Yisrael have no natural metzius (existence/standing) of their own in olam hazeh.

But when Hashem took us out of Mitzrayim and raised us up from the house of bondage to be in the aspect of sons.

Yet at Yetzias Mitzrayim Hashem lifted Bnei Yisrael out of slavery and elevated them to the status of His children — granting them a new kind of existence.

He gave us existence through the conduct of the Torah.

The Exodus and the Torah gave Bnei Yisrael a real metzius — not a natural one, but one founded on living by the Torah, a supernatural mode of existence.

As it is written, "And He did not lead them… by way of the land [of the Pelishtim]…"

The verse (Shemos 13:17) that Hashem did not lead them the natural, direct route hints that Bnei Yisrael were taken out of the "natural way" entirely and led by a higher, Divine path.

And afterward the Torah, until He brought us into Eretz Yisrael.

Then came the Torah, and the journey culminated in entering Eretz Yisrael — the land suited to this supernatural people.

And He built for us the Bais HaBechirah (the Chosen House, the Bais Hamikdash).

With the building of the Mikdash, Bnei Yisrael were given a true anchor in the world.

Then a place in the world was given to us.

Only through Eretz Yisrael and the Mikdash — themselves vessels of holiness — did Bnei Yisrael receive a genuine "place" in this world, a place that channels the supernal into the natural.

And this is the meaning of "you are sojourners and residents with Me."

Citing Vayikra (25:23), Bnei Yisrael are at once "sojourners" (without a permanent natural place) and "residents" (settled) — but only "with Me," with Hashem. Their settled place exists solely in relation to Him.

As it were, the honor of His kingship is not revealed in this world in a fixed and manifest way.

Just as Hashem's own royal glory is not openly and permanently revealed in this world, so too His people's greatness remains hidden.

And so too Bnei Yisrael.

Bnei Yisrael mirror this concealment of the Divine — their glory, like His, is veiled in olam hazeh.

And therefore Shabbos and Bnei Yisrael are one matter and one testimony.

This returns to the opening: Shabbos and Bnei Yisrael are truly one — both bear witness to the hidden Divine root of all blessing, which is why they are paired as partners.

For all [of this world] is fleeting vanity (hevel).

The visible world is hevel — transient and insubstantial — so true blessing cannot lie in its open display but only in the hidden root that both Shabbos and Yisrael embody.

And the root of the blessing is from Hashem, on Shabbos Kodesh, to Bnei Yisrael, His holy people.

The wellspring of all blessing flows from Hashem, through the holiness of Shabbos, to Bnei Yisrael — the two partners who alone can receive it.

As it is written: "it is a sign between Me and Bnei Yisrael."

Shabbos is the os (sign) of the bond between Hashem and Bnei Yisrael (Shemos 31:17), sealing their partnership.

As Chazal said, that it was given in private (b'tzin'ah) — and the allusion is as we have explained.

Chazal teach that Shabbos was given "in private," fitting its hidden nature; this concealment is the very allusion to all that the Sefas Emes has explained — that the bond and blessing of Shabbos and Yisrael are matters of the hidden inner dimension, not of outward display.

Summary: Shabbos and Bnei Yisrael are partners because they share one essence: both are the hidden root of all blessing rather than its open display. Just as Shabbos shows no revealed sustenance yet is the source upon which all blessing depends, so Bnei Yisrael appear the lowliest of nations — especially in galus — while secretly receiving the root of all blessing in a spiritual, concealed way. They are the "palate" of the world, able to taste the inner sweetness of creation. Their place is above nature, time, and space; only Yetzias Mitzrayim, the Torah, Eretz Yisrael, and the Mikdash gave them a foothold "with Me" in this world. Thus Shabbos is the os of their eternal bond — given b'tzin'ah, in keeping with the hidden nature they share.
