Hatred of Amalek born of love for Hashem

The connection of Parshas Zachor following [Parshas] Shekalim.

The Sefas Emes begins by exploring why the reading of Zachor (remembering Amalek) follows immediately after Shekalim (the giving toward the Mishkan).

For behold, the mitzvah is to remember the enmity of Amalek, since the essential blotting out of Amalek — may his name be erased — depends on the hatred of Bnei Yisrael toward him.

The core of erasing Amalek lies in Bnei Yisrael's genuine hatred of him; the mitzvah of Zachor is to keep that enmity alive.

And when the hatred is complete, he will be utterly blotted out.

Only when the hatred of Amalek is whole and perfect will he be fully erased.

And this was the sin of Shaul HaMelech.

King Shaul's failure regarding Amalek lay precisely in this incompleteness of hatred.

And Heaven forbid to say that he transgressed Hashem's command willfully (b'zadon).

The Sefas Emes is careful: Shaul did not deliberately defy Hashem's word.

Rather, they simply did not have the [necessary] hardness toward that wicked one, as it is written: "and he had pity (vayachmol)."

The lapse was a lack of the proper severity against Amalek; the verse records that Shaul took pity.

And consequently it was not within their power to destroy him completely.

Because the hatred was not whole, they lacked the spiritual power to wipe Amalek out entirely.

And one may further suggest that Shaul himself did possess complete hatred [of Amalek].

He offers a second reading: Shaul personally did hate Amalek fully.

For HaKadosh Baruch Hu commanded him to destroy him.

Hashem's direct command to Shaul itself instilled in him the full measure of hatred.

But the people were not at the ultimate degree of hatred.

The nation as a whole had not reached complete hatred of Amalek.

And the humility (anivus) that was in Shaul caused him [to fail].

Paradoxically, Shaul's great humility led to his downfall here.

For he reasoned: since Bnei Yisrael are not at the ultimate degree of hatred...

In his humility, Shaul measured the matter by the people's level rather than his own.

...it did not occur to him that his own hatred was sufficient to count for the entire klal.

He humbly never imagined that his personal, complete hatred could stand in for and elevate the whole nation.

And concerning this Shmuel rebuked him: "Even if you are small in your own eyes," etc.

Shmuel HaNavi's reproof — "though you are small in your own eyes, you are the head of the tribes" — points exactly to this misplaced humility.

And the fulfillment of this mitzvah — to hate him with ultimate hatred — depends on the abundance of love and deveikus of Bnei Yisrael in the avodah of the Creator, may He be blessed.

Perfect hatred of Amalek is not freestanding; it grows directly out of great love for Hashem and attachment to His service.

For according to the abundance of fervor (hislahavus) toward the side of holiness (sitra d'kedushah)...

The measure of one's burning enthusiasm for kedushah determines everything that follows.

...so too is the hatred toward the sitra achra (the other side).

The more one loves the holy side, the more naturally and intensely one despises the forces of impurity that Amalek embodies.

And therefore, after the donations of Bnei Yisrael to the Mikdash, when the love of Bnei Yisrael for HaKadosh Baruch Hu is awakened...

This explains the sequence: the giving of Shekalim toward the Mikdash awakens Bnei Yisrael's love for Hashem.

...then it is within their power to remember the enmity of the wicked Amalek, who blocks the completeness of His blessed Name and the completeness of the Throne.

Only once that love is aroused can they truly fulfill Zachor — hating Amalek, who prevents Hashem's Name and Throne from being whole.

As Chazal said: HaKadosh Baruch Hu swore that His Name is not complete until the name of Amalek is blotted out.

He cites Chazal that Hashem's Name and Throne remain incomplete so long as Amalek endures.

Therefore "there is war... from generation to generation (midor dor)."

This is why the Torah speaks of an ongoing war against Amalek in every generation.

That is to say: in every generation there are special illuminations (haaros) that would have been fit to be revealed, were it not for the wickedness of Amalek, who obstructs everything.

Each generation has its own unique spiritual lights waiting to shine, and Amalek's wickedness is precisely what holds them back.

And every servant of Hashem who lacks those illuminations...

Anyone striving to serve Hashem feels the absence of these blocked lights.

...certainly becomes, for him, a [ground for] ultimate hatred [of Amalek].

Recognizing that Amalek is what withholds his own spiritual illumination naturally arouses in the oved Hashem the complete, perfect hatred the mitzvah demands.

Summary: Zachor follows Shekalim because perfect hatred of Amalek flows from love of Hashem, which the donations to the Mikdash awaken. Shaul's failure was not willful defiance but a lapse of severity and an excess of humility — he never realized his own complete hatred could elevate the whole klal. Amalek blocks the completeness of Hashem's Name and Throne and withholds each generation's unique illuminations; recognizing this rouses in every oved Hashem the ultimate hatred needed to blot him out.
