Shabbos, Amalek, and remembrance

שבת יומא דזכירה.

Shabbos is the day of remembrance.

Shabbos is fundamentally a day of zechirah (remembering) — remembering Hashem and the holiness of Creation.

וע"י השבת זוכין בנ"י לזכירה.

And through Shabbos, Bnei Yisrael merit remembrance.

Keeping Shabbos is what grants Bnei Yisrael the capacity for true zechirah, an awareness that does not fade.

וכמו כן ע"י מחיית עמלק בא זכירה.

And likewise, through the blotting out of Amalek, remembrance comes.

Erasing Amalek is the second path to this same zechirah — once the force of forgetting is removed, remembrance is restored.

לכן כ' תמחה כו' זכר עמלק כו' לא תשכח.

Therefore it is written, "you shall blot out... the remembrance of Amalek... do not forget."

The Torah's command to wipe out Amalek is bound together with "do not forget" — the two are intrinsically connected.

שכשימחה שמו של עמלק יהי' הזכירה בשלימות.

For when the name of Amalek is blotted out, the remembrance will be complete.

Amalek is the obstacle to full remembrance; only when his influence is erased can zechirah reach its perfection.

כי כל מלחמת עמלק להשכיח מבנ"י התורה ולהתדבק בהבלי עולם שזה בחי' השכחה היפוך השבת שהוא השבתת מלאכה וזכירת הקדושה:

For the entire war of Amalek is to make Bnei Yisrael forget the Torah and to cling to the vanities of the world — which is the aspect of forgetting, the opposite of Shabbos, which is the cessation of work and the remembrance of holiness.

Amalek's whole campaign is to drag Bnei Yisrael into forgetting Torah and chasing empty worldly distractions. This "forgetting" is the exact inverse of Shabbos, which stops the distraction of melachah and reawakens the remembrance of kedushah.

Summary: Both Shabbos and the eradication of Amalek lead to zechirah — true remembrance of Torah and holiness. Amalek embodies the force of forgetting, dragging Bnei Yisrael toward worldly vanities, and is thus the precise opposite of Shabbos; only when Amalek is blotted out is remembrance made complete.
