Drawing Torah Without Suffering

בפסוק והי' לך לאות כו' למען תהי' תורת ה' בפיך כו'.

In the verse: “And it shall be for you as a sign… so that the Torah of the Lord shall be in your mouth.”

The Sefat Emet opens by focusing on the purpose of the “sign,” linking tefillin with making the Torah present and alive within a person.

כי גלות מצרים הי' הכנה למתן תורה שהוא מהג' מתנות שזוכין ע"י יסורים.

For the exile of Egypt was a preparation for receiving the Torah, which is one of the three gifts attained through suffering.

He teaches that the hardship of Egypt refined Israel so they could receive Torah, which is normally achieved through spiritual struggle.

אכן בזכירת יצ"מ יכולין לבוא לתורה בלי יסורים.

However, through remembering the Exodus one can come to Torah without suffering.

Remembering liberation can substitute for the pain otherwise required for spiritual growth.

וכמו כן בש"ק שהוא זכר ליצ"מ הוא יום מנוחה שזוכין לתורה בלי יסורים.

And likewise, on Shabbat—which is a remembrance of the Exodus—it is a day of rest through which one merits Torah without suffering.

Shabbat itself functions as spiritual elevation without hardship, mirroring the power of the Exodus.

ולכן א"צ תפילין בש"ק.

Therefore, tefillin are not needed on Shabbat.

Shabbat already provides the spiritual “sign” that tefillin normally supply.

ובאמת נטע וחקק הקב"ה אותיות התורה בנפשות בנ"י.

In truth, God planted and engraved the letters of the Torah in the souls of Israel.

Every Jew already contains the Torah internally, in latent form.

אך שצריכין להוציא אלה האותיות מכח אל הפועל להיות תורת ה' בפיך.

But one must bring these letters from potential to actuality, so that the Torah of the Lord will be in your mouth.

The work of spiritual life is drawing out the Torah imprinted within the soul.

ולזה מסייע מצות תפילין ושבת.

And to this end, the mitzvot of tefillin and Shabbat provide assistance.

Both practices activate and reveal the inner letters of Torah within a person.

וכפי יגיעת האדם בכל יום כמ"ש ושמרת כו' החוקה הזאת לשמור ולהשתוקק בכל יום להוציא אלה הרשימות מכח אל הפועל.

And this is according to a person’s daily effort, as it says: “You shall keep this statute”—to guard and yearn each day to bring these impressions from potential to actuality.

Daily spiritual striving awakens the internal inscriptions of Torah.

ופי' למען תהי' תורת ה' בפיך.

And this explains “so that the Torah of the Lord shall be in your mouth.”

The verse refers to making inner Torah emerge as living speech and consciousness.

כי כשאדם מקבל עול מ"ש כראוי במס"נ.

For when a person accepts the yoke of Heaven properly with self‑sacrifice,

Total commitment activates divine speech within the person.

אז רוח ה' דובר בו כמ"ש אשר אנכי מצוך היום ממש.

then the spirit of God speaks within him, as it says: “Which I command you today”—literally today.

The command becomes immediate and internal, uttered through the person.

וכן כתיב אתם עדי נאום ה'.

And similarly it is written: “You are My witnesses, says the Lord.”

Israel’s true testimony is when God’s speech manifests through them.

פי' כשמעידין באמת על הבורא הוא נאום ה' ממש.

Meaning: when one truly testifies about the Creator, it is literally the speech of God.

Authentic testimony aligns human speech with divine utterance.

והוא כשנעשה באמת רשימה באדם ע"י העדות.

And this occurs when a genuine imprint is made upon a person through this testimony.

Testifying shapes the soul, engraving divine truth within.

לאות על ידך ולזכרון בין עיניך.

“As a sign upon your hand and a remembrance between your eyes.”

Tefillin symbolize these inner imprints becoming visible and active.

הרמז שיעשו הדברים רשימה ואות בנפש האדם.

This hints that these matters make an imprint and sign upon a person’s soul.

The physical sign reflects a spiritual marking.

[וגם וכתבתם על מזוזות יתכן להיות בדרך הזה לעובד ה' במס"נ שגם כותלי ביתו מעידין עליו].

[And likewise, “You shall write them on the doorposts” may be understood similarly: one who serves God with self‑sacrifice causes even the walls of his home to testify about him.]

The home itself becomes a partner in one’s divine testimony.

ולזה רמזו חז"ל הקורא ק"ש בלא תפילין כמעיד עדות שקר בעצמו.

And to this the Sages hinted: one who recites Shema without tefillin is like giving false testimony about himself.

Without the inner imprint, verbal testimony lacks truth.

פי' תפילין אות ופילול.

Meaning: tefillin are a sign and a contemplation.

They are both symbol and spiritual focus.

וכשאין הדברים עושין בו רושם. אינו עדות אמת.

And when these matters make no impression upon him, it is not true testimony.

Outer words without inner resonance are spiritually false.

כי אין העדות בפה בלבד. רק להיות אתם עדי בעצם הנפשות.

For testimony is not only with the mouth, but to be “My witnesses” in the very essence of the soul.

Witnessing must be embodied, not merely spoken.

ומצות תפילין ושבת מסייעין לזה כנ"ל.

And the mitzvot of tefillin and Shabbat assist in this, as explained above.

They activate and support the inner work of becoming a divine witness.

והטעם כי ביד חזקה הוציאך להיות למעלה מן הטבע ותוכל לקיים כל זה.

And the reason is that with a strong hand He brought you out—to lift you above nature, enabling you to fulfill all this.

The Exodus empowered Israel to transcend natural limits and realize their inner Torah.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Shabbat, tefillin, and remembering the Exodus awaken the Torah already inscribed in the soul. True testimony to God emerges when these inner letters become active, making a person a living witness whose words express divine speech.
