Completing the deed: erasing Amalek perfects Hashem's Name
Amalek · naaseh venishma · bris milah · sur mera vaaseh tov · Purim
In the Midrash: "Bless Hashem, His angels" (Tehillim 103:20) — and not all His angels, for the lower ones cannot withstand the duties (tafkidim) of the Holy One, blessed is He, etc.; "those who do His word" — for they placed naaseh (doing) before nishma (hearing).
The Midrash distinguishes between the higher angels who can fully carry out Hashem's commands and the lower ones who cannot. Bnei Yisrael earned praise as "doers of His word" because at Har Sinai they said naaseh venishma — committing to do even before they heard, putting action first.
See there, where the Midrash expounds that this was not sustained in the hands of the six hundred thousand, and Moshe Rabbeinu remained alone — see there.
The Sefas Emes points to the Midrash's continuation: the lofty level of naaseh venishma slipped from the six hundred thousand (the entire nation), and only Moshe Rabbeinu held onto it, remaining alone in that madreigah.
The meaning of "to withstand the duties of the Holy One, blessed is He" is to be one who completes the entire shlichus (mission).
To "stand up to" Hashem's tasks means actually finishing the job you were sent to do — carrying every mission through to completion rather than leaving it unfinished.
For everything follows the conclusion, and the completion of the tikkun (rectification) is in the deed.
As Chazal say, all goes after the finish. The real fixing of the world is accomplished not merely through hearing or intent but through the actual maaseh (deed) that brings the work to its end.
And in this Bnei Yisrael stumbled through the cheit ha'egel (sin of the Golden Calf).
It was precisely in this dimension — bringing the commitment to completion through action — that Bnei Yisrael failed when they sinned with the eigel, undoing the lofty level they had reached at Sinai.
And it is brought down that all of this was caused by that wicked one, Amalek — may his name be erased — as it is written: "who happened upon you on the way" (Devarim 25:18).
The downfall was set in motion by Amalek. The passuk "asher korcha baderech" hints that Amalek "cooled off" (lashon kar) Bnei Yisrael's fervor, weakening their resolve and leading toward the failure of the eigel.
And he did not allow them to complete what they had begun.
Amalek's whole damage was to prevent Bnei Yisrael from finishing what they had started — blocking the gemar, the completion-in-action that is the essence of the tikkun.
And in truth this is the sod (inner secret) of bris milah (the covenant of circumcision).
The Sefas Emes now reveals that this idea of completion is bound up with the deeper meaning of the bris.
For there is a bris halashon (covenant of the tongue) and a bris hama'or (covenant of the flesh).
Drawing on Sefer Yetzirah, the Sefas Emes notes two covenants Hashem made with Avraham: one of the tongue (speech) and one of the bris of milah. These correspond to two stages of avodah.
The tongue is the beginning (reishis).
The bris of speech represents the opening stage — the verbal commitment and recognition that initiates the avodah.
And this was rectified at Yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus from Egypt), and it is the remembrance of Yetzias Mitzrayim.
The bris halashon was fixed at the Exodus — which is why we are commanded to speak of and remember Yetzias Mitzrayim, the avodah of the mouth and of beginnings.
And the bris hama'or is the end (acharis).
The bris of milah represents the concluding stage — the final completion of the avodah.
And it is in the deed.
This second covenant is accomplished specifically through maaseh — through action that brings the work to its end.
As it is written: "Know the God of your father and serve Him" (Divrei Hayamim I 28:9).
The passuk pairs two things: da (knowing Hashem) and avdehu (serving Him in action). Knowledge is the beginning; service through deed is the completion.
And to this daas (knowledge) Bnei Yisrael merited at Kabbalas HaTorah (the receiving of the Torah) after the Exodus.
The "knowing" half of the passuk was attained when Bnei Yisrael received the Torah following Yetzias Mitzrayim — the bris halashon, the beginning.
But "and serve Him" in deed was not yet completed in its fullness.
The second half — serving Hashem fully through action — remained unfinished, because the completion-in-deed had been disrupted by Amalek and the eigel.
And these two are the aspects of "turn away from evil and do good" (Tehillim 34:15).
The two covenants map onto "sur mera" (turning from evil — the initial purification) and "asei tov" (doing good — the active completion).
For it is brought down: "My Name" (Shemi) together with Yud-Hei equals 365, and "My remembrance" (Zichri) together with Vav-Hei equals 248.
Chazal teach (on "zeh shemi... vezeh zichri," Shemos 3:15) that "shemi" with the letters Yud-Hei corresponds to the 365 prohibitions (sur mera), and "zichri" with Vav-Hei corresponds to the 248 positive mitzvos (asei tov) — splitting the Name of Hashem into its two halves.
And Chazal said: His Name is not complete until the seed of Amalek is erased.
The Name of Hashem itself remains incomplete so long as Amalek exists, for Amalek blocks the active completion (the "zichri" half) that corresponds to the doing of good.
Therefore one is not permitted to pronounce the Name of Havayah (the Tetragrammaton) except by substituting letters.
Because the Name is not yet whole, we may not utter it as written, but only through substitute letters (reading it as Ad-noy) — the full Name awaits the completion.
But the Name Yud-Hei is mentioned.
The first half of the Name — Yud-Hei, the aspect of "shemi" and sur mera, the beginning — can already be invoked, since that stage of the tikkun is in place.
But the completion of the Name — the aspect of "zichri" — that is the completion of the tikkun, in the deed.
The final letters of the Name, corresponding to "zichri" and to asei tov, represent the full rectification accomplished through action — which is precisely what is still missing.
Therefore it is called the bris hama'or, which is the spreading of daas throughout the entire stature (komah).
The bris of milah is the covenant of completion because it represents knowledge of Hashem extending and permeating the whole person — daas carried all the way into deed, throughout the entire "body" of one's avodah.
Therefore it is written: "Hashem has a war with Amalek from generation to generation" (Shemos 17:16).
Because Amalek obstructs the completion in action, the battle against him is ongoing through all generations until that completion is achieved.
And there it is written: "My remembrance" (zichri) for generation after generation (Shemos 3:15).
The same word "zichri" — the half of the Name tied to the active completion — is described as enduring "ledor dor," paralleling the generation-to-generation war with Amalek; the two are bound together.
Therefore in the Mishkan and the Mikdash the Name of Havayah was pronounced, for there the rectification of the deed took place through the power of the korbanos (offerings).
In the Bais Hamikdash the full Name could be uttered, because there the completion-in-action was realized through the avodah of the korbanos — the place where asei tov reached its fulfillment.
And therefore this was through the power of Moshe Rabbeinu, who was not part of that sin.
Since Moshe Rabbeinu had no share in the cheit ha'egel — and alone retained the level of naaseh venishma — it was specifically through his koach that the completion-in-deed of the Mishkan could come about.
And therefore after the erasing of Amalek the deed is rectified.
Only once Amalek — the force that blocks completion — is wiped out can the dimension of maaseh, the active fulfillment, finally be made whole.
And so too on Purim, as it is written: "remembered and done" (Esther 9:28).
Purim, the festival of Amalek's defeat, joins both aspects in its very phrasing — "nizkarim" (remembrance, the beginning) and "na'asim" (doing, the completion) — uniting the two halves.
"To make the days of Purim" (Esther 9:21).
The mitzvah of Purim is expressed in language of "doing" (la'asos) — fittingly, since Purim marks the rectification of the realm of action that follows the downfall of Amalek.
And see in the sefer Ginas Egoz, page 31, and you will understand further.
The Sefas Emes refers the reader to the kabbalistic work Ginas Egoz for a deeper treatment of these matters concerning the divine Names.
And therefore Nissan is Yetzias Mitzrayim, which is the bris halashon, which is the beginning.
The month of Nissan — the month of the Exodus and the start of the year's order — embodies the bris halashon, the covenant of speech and of beginnings.
And therefore the mitzvah is to recount the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim.
Because Nissan corresponds to the covenant of the tongue, its central mitzvah is sippur Yetzias Mitzrayim — telling over the Exodus, the avodah of the mouth.
"A mouth that speaks" (Peh sach — a play on the word Pesach).
The Sefas Emes alludes to the well-known reading of "Pesach" as "peh sach" — the mouth that tells — underscoring that Pesach is the festival of the bris halashon, speech and reishis.
And Adar is the end of the year, the bris hama'or, which is the ultimate purpose (tachlis).
Adar, the final month of the year's cycle, corresponds to the bris hama'or — the covenant of completion and the tachlis, the goal toward which everything has been moving: the rectification of action accomplished through the erasing of Amalek on Purim.
Summary: The completion of any avodah lies in the deed (asei tov / bris hama'or), not merely in the initial commitment (sur mera / bris halashon). Bnei Yisrael reached the level of naaseh venishma at Sinai but, through Amalek's "cooling" and the cheit ha'egel, failed to bring it to completion in action. This is why the Name of Hashem remains incomplete — we may invoke only its first half (Yud-Hei, "shemi") until Amalek is erased and its second half ("zichri") is fulfilled. Through Moshe Rabbeinu, the korbanos of the Mikdash, and ultimately Purim ("nizkarim vena'asim"), the realm of maaseh is rectified. Nissan/Pesach (peh sach) is the beginning — the bris halashon of remembering the Exodus; Adar is the end — the bris hama'or, the tachlis where action is finally made whole.
