Oneg Shabbos opens the soul's closed gate
oneg · nega · Shabbos · neshamah yeseirah · metzora
It is brought in the Zohar: one who is able to take delight (oneg) in Shabbos and does not do so — the oneg turns for him into nega (affliction/plague).
The Zohar plays on the letters: the same letters that spell oneg (delight) spell nega (plague). One who fails to take Shabbos delight inverts that delight into affliction.
It follows automatically that, since the measure of good is greater, through oneg Shabbos the nega is turned into oneg.
Since the power of good outweighs that of evil, the reverse is also true: properly delighting in Shabbos transforms affliction back into delight.
And behold, the explanation of oneg: it is an acronym for Eden, Nahar (river), Gan (garden).
The word oneg (ayin-nun-gimmel) alludes to the three stages of Eden, the river, and the garden.
As it is written, "and a river goes out from Eden to water the garden" (Bereishis 2:10).
The verse describes flow from the hidden source (Eden) through the river into the garden — a model of life descending in stages.
And behold, just as it is in the world, so it is in the soul.
The structure of Eden-river-garden in the cosmos is mirrored within the human soul.
For man is a small world, and it is written, "and He placed there… the man whom He had formed" (Bereishis 2:8).
Man is a microcosm; he was placed in the garden, indicating that the garden's pattern is reflected in him.
If so, the form of man corresponds to the form of Gan Eden.
The human being's inner structure parallels the structure of the Garden of Eden.
And man too is divided into three parts: Eden, river, garden — in the aspect of nefesh, ruach, neshamah.
The three stages correspond to the three levels of the soul: nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.
And also in the body: brain, heart, liver.
Within the physical body the same threefold pattern appears as brain, heart, and liver.
And they all must be drawn after the brain.
The avodah is to have the lower faculties (heart and liver) follow and submit to the mind.
And this is "a good heart has a feast always" (Mishlei 15:15).
When the heart is aligned with the mind, it is constantly in a state of inner joy — a perpetual "feast."
And this is the aspect of oneg.
This continuous inner gladness is the true oneg — delight that flows from the soul's proper alignment.
Therefore on Shabbos Kodesh, when there is the neshamah yeseirah (the extra soul), the gate that is closed during the weekdays is opened.
The extra soul of Shabbos opens an inner "gate" that remains shut during the workweek.
And the heart receives the illumination of the mind (mochin).
On Shabbos the heart is able to receive the light of the higher intellect.
And this is the opposite of the metzora — his "shutting away" (hesger) — that the heart is closed and dulled, so that it cannot receive and be drawn after the mind in the head.
The metzora's quarantine reflects a spiritual reality: a heart sealed and coarsened, unable to take in the light of the mind — the very opposite of Shabbos.
Therefore, in the purification of the metzora, He commanded to place blood upon the ridge of his ear, the thumb of his hand, and the toe of his foot.
The purification ritual touches the ear, hand, and foot — pointing to a repair of the person's whole structure.
To hint at the rectification of the three parts of man: head, body, and legs.
Ear, hand, and toe represent head, body, and legs — so the metzora's purification mends all three tiers of the person.
And man must guard the body so that it can be drawn after the neshamah, as it is written, "to work it and to guard it" — through the 248 positive mitzvos and the 365 negative mitzvos.
The mitzvos, corresponding to the limbs and sinews of the body, are the means of guarding the body so it follows the soul.
For according to the guarding, so can one receive vitality from the neshamah. Therefore it is written, "and you shall separate (the Bnei Yisrael)… and they shall not… by defiling My Mishkan" (Vayikra 15:31).
The more one guards the body through mitzvos, the more soul-vitality it can hold; defilement comes from failing to keep the body pure, which "contaminates" the indwelling sanctuary.
As is brought: a person should always see himself as though a holy one dwells within his innards. And as it is written, "the gate… shall be closed… for Hashem, the God of Yisrael, has entered through it" (Yechezkel 44:2).
There is a holy "guest" — a portion of the Divine — within each person, like the sealed eastern gate through which Hashem entered; it must be guarded and not profaned.
"And on the Shabbos day it shall be opened" (Yechezkel 46:1).
That sealed gate is opened specifically on Shabbos.
So it is in a Jew: there is a "closed point" which is a portion of the Divine from above.
Every Jew carries a sealed inner point — a piece of Godliness — usually concealed within.
"And on the Shabbos day it shall be opened," and so on.
On Shabbos that hidden inner point is opened and revealed.
And this is the aspect of the neshamah yeseirah and oneg Shabbos, as stated.
The opening of that inner point is precisely the neshamah yeseirah and the delight of Shabbos described above.
Summary: The word oneg (delight), which shares its letters with nega (affliction), spells Eden-river-garden — a structure mirrored in the soul (nefesh-ruach-neshamah) and body (brain-heart-liver), where the lower faculties must follow the mind. On Shabbos the neshamah yeseirah opens the inner "closed gate," letting the heart receive the light of the mind. This is the reverse of the metzora, whose heart is sealed and dulled; guarding the body through mitzvos lets it follow the soul and turns nega back into oneg.
