“That which we read the Song of Songs on Passover.”
The Sefat Emet begins by explaining why the Song of Songs is specifically read on Passover.
“For the Song of Songs comes to explain that all matters of this world are only a parable for understanding the love that is required toward God.”
According to the Sefat Emet, the physical world serves merely as a metaphor through which one can grasp the deeper divine love between God and Israel.
“And this is the meaning of ‘Song of Songs’—that from all the songs in the world, this song emerges.”
The Song of Songs transcends all other forms of expression; it distills the essence of all worldly songs into a higher spiritual song.
“But a person must cling to the inner meaning, and it is difficult that everything should be solely for the sake of knowing how to serve God.”
The challenge lies in maintaining attachment to the spiritual truth behind worldly metaphors, rather than becoming lost in the external form.
“And God forbid, when people cling to this world, they cannot understand the inner meaning at all.”
Excessive attachment to materiality clouds spiritual vision and blocks comprehension of divine purpose.
“Therefore, on Passover, the season of our freedom.”
Passover represents a moment of spiritual liberation, enabling a person to rise above worldly constraints.
“A person can learn God’s will even from nature as well.”
During Passover, the divine light makes it possible to perceive God’s will not only through Torah but even through the natural world.
“For the inner point is revealed.”
Passover opens a channel to the deepest inner essence of the soul and of creation.
“Therefore the Song of Songs is fitting at this time.”
Because the inner dimension becomes accessible on Passover, the Song of Songs—expressing the ultimate love between God and Israel—is especially appropriate.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that on Passover, the world’s inner meaning is revealed, enabling us to understand the divine love symbolized in the Song of Songs. This is why it is read during the festival of liberation.
