Song as Spiritual Connection

“And it is taught that Hezekiah did not sing a song over the miracle, and therefore he did not become the Messiah.”
The Sefat Emet begins with the teaching that Hezekiah’s failure to offer praise after his miraculous salvation prevented him from attaining the role of Mashiach.
“And my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, explained that it was revealed to Hezekiah with absolute clarity that the earth and its fullness belong to God, and therefore he was not further moved by the miracle.”
The Rebbe interprets that Hezekiah perceived God’s presence so clearly in ordinary reality that even a miracle did not add to his awe, and thus he did not experience the impulse to sing.
“And so it is explicitly stated in the Midrash on Song of Songs.”
The Midrash supports this interpretation, noting that Hezekiah’s spiritual state explains his silence.
“And this is as stated above: the essence of song is a drawing down and an act of faith, a cleaving to the supernal root when a space above nature is opened.”
The Sefat Emet defines song as the act of connecting to the Divine source that becomes accessible when miracles—events beyond nature—reveal a higher realm.
“For every miracle comes from above nature, and a person must cling to that place.”
Miracles invite the human being to ascend spiritually and bond with the transcendent level from which the miracle originates.
“And so was Hezekiah always, as it is said: ‘What is good in Your eyes I have done,’ and the Sages explained that he joined redemption to prayer.”
Hezekiah habitually lived in a state of spiritual alignment, exemplified by his meticulous joining of redemption to prayer.
“And this is as stated above: every physical act was for him as one acting before the King, for he was attached to the inner point within every deed.”
Hezekiah perceived the Divine in everyday actions, constantly connected to the inner spiritual core of all activity.
“And prayer is when one must cry out to awaken the innerness from its concealment.”
Prayer functions as a call that reveals the hidden spiritual depth within the self.
“And redemption is the opening of that innerness.”
Redemption is the moment when the inner point becomes fully revealed and accessible.
“And truly, through faith—through anticipating His salvation—the innerness is opened, as stated above.”
Faith itself opens the inner spiritual realm, even before an actual miracle occurs.
“And surely Moses our teacher and Israel at that time were also on this level.”
The Sefat Emet affirms that Moses and Israel during the Exodus possessed this same high spiritual capacity.
“However, there is no limit to the apprehension of His wonders.”
The depth of Divine revelation is infinite, and therefore song continues to expand endlessly.
“And because Israel were attached to Moses, as it is written, ‘and in Moses His servant,’ they merited to join with him and draw forth the words of the Song, which includes praise for all miracles that were and will be, as the Zohar teaches.”
Israel’s connection to Moses enabled them to participate in the cosmic song that encompasses all Divine wonders across time.
“And there, there is always further renewal.”
The realm of song is marked by continual spiritual renewal and expansion.
“And in the case of Hezekiah, it appears that he could not sing because of the deficiency of his generation, and he did not become the Messiah because his generation was not worthy of complete redemption.”
The community’s spiritual state limited Hezekiah’s ability to express the song that could have brought full redemption.
Summary: Song emerges when miracles open access to the supernal realm, and through faith one draws this innerness into the world. Hezekiah’s greatness lay in his constant awareness of God in nature, but his generation’s limitations prevented the full expression of redemptive song.
