Self‑Nullification and Faith

והנה ברגע אחד נהפכו מאמירת המבלי אין קברים. לומר זה אלי ואנוהו.
And behold, in a single moment they turned from saying, “Was it for lack of graves…?” to declaring, “This is my God and I will glorify Him.”
The Sefat Emet highlights the dramatic spiritual reversal from complaint to revelation at the sea.
ודרשו ז"ל ראתה שפחה על הים כו'.
And our sages taught: even a maidservant saw at the sea [what prophets never saw].
This underscores the uniquely elevated spiritual vision granted at that moment.
כי בוודאי קריעת ים סוף לא הי' בים עצמו רק בכל איש ישראל ג"כ.
For certainly the splitting of the sea was not merely in the sea itself but also within every person of Israel.
The miracle occurred internally, in each individual’s spiritual state.
והוא עצמו מאמר מרע"ה התיצבו וראו את ישועת ה' כו' ואתם תחרישון.
And this is precisely Moses’ statement: “Stand and see the salvation of the Lord… and you shall be silent.”
Moses calls for inner stillness so the miracle can manifest within them.
ולא נקרע להם הים עד שנכנסו עד צוארם במים.
The sea did not split for them until they entered the water up to their necks.
Their willingness to risk everything was the condition for the miracle.
וזה הי' עיקר הישועה לבטל כל הפעולות עבור מאמר השי"ת.
And this was the essence of the salvation: to nullify all actions before the word of God.
True redemption required surrendering personal control to divine command.
וכתיב הים ראה וינס.
And it is written: “The sea saw and fled.”
The verse teaches that the sea itself responded to what it perceived.
פשוט י"ל שראה שנסו לתוך המים עבור מאמר השי"ת ויסעו והוא מס"נ לגמרי.
Simply, we may say that it saw that they entered the water for the sake of God’s command and journeyed forth, a complete act of self‑sacrifice.
The sea “saw” Israel’s devotion and reacted accordingly.
ומזה נשא הים קו"ח בעצמו לנוס ג"כ.
From this the sea derived a kal‑vaḥomer for itself to flee as well.
If humans could transcend nature for God, the sea reasoned that it must also bend its nature.
וחז"ל דרשו ראה וינס ויצא החוצה.
And the sages interpreted: “It saw and fled and went outside.”
This indicates total withdrawal from its natural state.
ג"כ הפי' שביטל ויצא מרצון עצמו מכל וכל כמ"ש במ"א.
This too means that it annulled itself entirely of its own will, as explained elsewhere.
The sea acted with a kind of voluntary self‑nullification.
ועיקר העצה בעת צרה לברר ולקבל רצון השי"ת בכל לב ולהיות מצפה רק שיושיע השי"ת למען שמו שיראה גבורתו ית'.
The primary counsel in a time of distress is to clarify and accept God’s will wholeheartedly, hoping only that God save for the sake of His name, that His might be revealed.
Salvation flows from inner alignment with divine will.
וז"ש התיצבו וראו כו' שלא להרהר רק בזה.
And that is the meaning of “Stand and see…”—to think only of this.
Moses directs them toward singular focus on divine deliverance.
והים הוא המרעיש תמיד יותר מכל הנבראים כנודע ונעשה כאבן דומם.
And the sea, which is known to be more turbulent than all other creatures, became like a silent stone.
The miracle involved transforming chaos into perfect stillness.
וכמו כן הי' בבנ"י. תחרישון.
And so it was with Israel: “You shall be silent.”
Israel too achieved inner stillness and self‑nullification.
וזה עיקר קי"ס.
And this is the essence of the splitting of the sea.
The core miracle was spiritual transformation.
ואפשר קנו בני ישראל זה ע"י נס קי"ס שנשאו קו"ח מים כמ"ש ז"ל ליקח קו"ח משמים וארץ.
And it is possible Israel acquired this quality through the miracle itself, for they bore a kal‑vaḥomer from the waters, as the sages said: to derive a kal‑vaḥomer from heaven and earth.
The miracle taught them a spiritual logic of devotion surpassing nature.
כי אף שאין להם בחירה מ"מ אדרבה כיון שניתן בחירה לאדם ע"כ שיש בכח שכלו לעשות יותר כבוד שמים מהנבראים שאין להם בחירה.
For although the elements have no free will, man—who has been granted free choice—can honor Heaven more than creations without choice.
Human free will enables greater sanctification than nature can express.
וז"ש במדרש שהים טען אני נבראתי בשלישי ואתה בששי כו'.
And thus the Midrash says: the sea argued, “I was created on the third day and you on the sixth…”
The sea invokes creation order to claim superiority.
כמ"ש חז"ל שאם זכה קדם לכל מעשה בראשית ואם לאו יתוש קדמך כו'.
As the sages said: if a person merits, he precedes all creation; if not, even a gnat precedes him.
Spiritual refinement determines true precedence.
ופרשנו כי כשמבטל החומר הרוחניות קודם לכל.
And we explained that when one nullifies the material, the spiritual precedes all else.
Spiritual primacy emerges through shedding material attachment.
אבל כשדבוק בחומר יתוש קדמו.
But when one is attached to materiality, a gnat precedes him.
Clinging to the physical lowers a person’s spiritual rank.
וז"ש שכשירדו בנ"י תוך הים ומסרו נפשם וכן מ"ש מרע"ה תחרישון עי"ז נקרע הים כנ"ל.
And thus, when Israel descended into the sea and gave up their lives, and as Moses said “Be silent,” through this the sea split.
Their self‑sacrifice activated the miracle.
וכן להיפוך ג"כ שע"י קריעת י"ס נקבע בישראל מס"נ להשי"ת כמ"ש ויאמינו.
And conversely, through the splitting of the sea, self‑sacrifice for God became embedded within Israel, as it is written: “And they believed.”
The miracle ingrained enduring devotion.
ובנ"י יכולין גם עתה לבוא למס"נ כמ"ש מה לך הים כי תנוס כו' מלפני אדון כו'.
And Israel can even now attain self‑sacrifice, as it says: “What is with you, sea, that you flee…? From before the Master…”
The sea’s reaction serves as an eternal model for Israel’s own spiritual response.
שצריכין לעורר עצמו ע"י קי"ס כנ"ל.
For one must awaken oneself through the splitting of the sea, as above.
The event remains a spiritual trigger in every generation.
כי כמו שנשאר נס קי"ס לדורות כמ"ש זמן חירותינו.
For just as the miracle of the sea remains for generations, as we say “the season of our freedom,”
The freedom revealed then persists eternally.
כמו כן האמונה והיראה שהי' להם.
so too the faith and awe that they attained.
These spiritual qualities also endure across generations.
וזה עיקר הנס שנעשה קי"ס שהוא ביטול החומר בכל איש ישראל שזה חירות גמור שמי שישלוט ברוחו הוא בן חורין.
And this is the essence of the miracle of the sea: the nullification of the material in every Israelite, which is true freedom—for one who rules his spirit is a free person.
Inner mastery is the Torah’s definition of freedom.
וז"ש ויושע ה' כו' את ישראל דייקא אותם עצמם כנ"ל.
And this is the meaning of “And God saved Israel”—specifically those very individuals, as above.
The salvation transformed their inner selves.
עיקר השירה הי' ע"ז האמונה והיראה כנ"ל.
The essence of the song was about this faith and awe, as above.
The Song at the Sea celebrated inner spiritual awakening more than the physical miracle.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the true miracle of the Sea was internal: Israel’s self‑nullification, faith, and willingness for self‑sacrifice. This inner transformation made the sea respond, forged enduring spiritual freedom, and became the core of the Song at the Sea.
