Sanctity of the Festivals

Pesach · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 8

Holidays · Divine Presence · Spiritual Insight · Faith

“Anyone who demeans the festivals is as though they worship idols.”

The Sefat Emet begins by stressing the spiritual gravity of treating the festivals lightly, equating it to idolatry because the festivals are channels of divine revelation.

As it is written: “Molten gods…” and adjacent to it, “The Festival of Matzot…”

The juxtaposition teaches that neglecting the festivals parallels the making of a false god, for both obscure true divine presence.

For the festivals are a testimony for Israel.

The festivals function as witnesses, testifying to the unique bond between Israel and God.

As it is written: “There the tribes ascended… a testimony for Israel.”

This verse affirms that Israel’s pilgrimage itself bears witness to their covenantal identity.

It is explained: The verse “All your males shall be seen” — the Sages interpret it as “to see and to be seen.”

The mutual seeing expresses reciprocal revelation: Israel sees God, and God reveals Himself to Israel.

The meaning is that on these holy days additional knowledge is granted to the Israelite, and the concealments and darkness of this world are removed.

The Sefat Emet teaches that festivals elevate consciousness and strip away worldly obscurity.

Therefore one is able to behold the face of God.

When the veils fall away, the soul becomes capable of direct divine encounter.

As it is written: “Whether he saw or knew.”

This hints that seeing and knowing are intertwined forms of divine awareness.

So too, the knowledge of the Children of Israel is revealed on the festivals, and the separating veil is removed from them.

The festivals uniquely activate Israel’s inner knowledge, dissolving spiritual barriers.

As the Sages said: “Even an iron barrier cannot separate.”

This teaches that no external obstruction can block the divine connection awakened on the festivals.

And according to how much a person believes in this, he nullifies the separating veil within himself.

The removal of spiritual concealment is proportional to one’s faith in the festivals’ power to reveal God.

Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that the festivals are testimonies of divine revelation. Treating them lightly obscures God's presence like idolatry, while honoring them lifts the veils of darkness, enabling true seeing and knowing of God according to the depth of one's faith.
