Concerning the guarding (shemirah) of the Leviim.

The Sefas Emes turns to the Torah's command that the Leviim stand watch over the Mishkan, and asks what this "guarding" really signifies.

For in every place where there is a revelation of the penimiyus (inner dimension), guarding is needed — like "Zachor" and "Shamor" on Shabbos — because on it the inner gate is opened.

Wherever the hidden inner light breaks through and is revealed, it requires shemirah (protective guarding). Shabbos is paired with both "Zachor" (remember) and "Shamor" (guard) precisely because on Shabbos the "inner gate" of penimiyus opens, and an open gate needs guarding.

And likewise milah (circumcision) within the soul.

Bris milah too reveals an inner point in the nefesh — the soul's hidden vitality exposed — and therefore it as well demands guarding.

And likewise in the Mikdash there is remembering (zechirah) and guarding (shemirah).

The Bais Hamikdash is the supreme place of revealed penimiyus, so it too has its "zachor" and "shamor" — its remembering and its guarding.

The "remembering" with the mouth is the shirah (song).

In the Mikdash, the dimension of "zachor" is fulfilled through the Leviim's song — verbal remembrance, the avodah of the mouth.

And [there is] the guarding (shemirah).

Alongside the song stands the second dimension — the Leviim's watch, their shemirah over the sanctuary.

And likewise, regarding the Jewish person in general, who has within him the illumination of the inner neshamah, he needs guarding and remembering — through positive mitzvos (mitzvos asei) and negative mitzvos (mitzvos lo sa'asei).

Every Jew carries an inner glow of neshamah, a revealed penimiyus, which likewise must be protected. This is accomplished through the mitzvos: the positive commands serve as "zechirah" (remembering/active expression) and the prohibitions serve as "shemirah" (guarding).

And it is all a reflection of what was with Adam HaRishon in Gan Eden — which is the inner gate — where it is written "to work it and to guard it (l'avdah u'l'shamrah)"; and it is all one matter.

All these pairings trace back to Adam in Gan Eden, the original "inner gate" of revealed penimiyus, where he was charged "to work it and to guard it." Avodah (working/serving) corresponds to "zachor"/positive mitzvos, and shemirah to "shamor"/prohibitions — and all of it is fundamentally one and the same idea: wherever the inner light shines, it must be both expressed and guarded.

Summary: Wherever the inner dimension (penimiyus) is revealed — Shabbos, bris milah, the Bais Hamikdash, and the neshamah within every Jew — it requires guarding, expressed as the pair "zechirah" and "shemirah." This is why the Leviim both sang and stood watch, and why the Jew serves Hashem through positive mitzvos (active remembering) and prohibitions (guarding). All of it stems from one root: Adam in Gan Eden, charged "to work it and to guard it."
