Shavuos and the yearly renewal of Torah

It is the custom to engage in Torah on the night of the festival.

The Sefas Emes opens by addressing the minhag of learning Torah all night on Shavuos.

For it is taught, "Prepare yourself to learn Torah, for it is not an inheritance to you."

Pirkei Avos teaches that Torah is not automatically inherited; one must actively prepare himself to acquire it.

And this is difficult, for it is written, "[the Torah] is the inheritance (morashah) of the congregation of Yaakov."

This seems to contradict the pasuk that calls the Torah an inheritance of all Bnei Yisrael.

But the Torah is called a "Tree of Life (eitz chaim)."

The resolution begins with the image of the Torah as a living tree.

And just as a tree brings forth fruit every single year, so too the Torah renews its fruits every year.

Like a tree that produces fresh fruit annually, the Torah yields new insights and "fruits" each year.

Therefore on Atzeres (Shavuos) [we are judged] on the fruits of the tree — that is, the renewal of the Torah, which is called a "Tree of Life."

Shavuos, when the world is judged regarding the fruits of trees, corresponds spiritually to the yearly renewal of the Torah, the true Tree of Life.

And so it is brought in the sefarim.

This idea is found in earlier works as well.

Therefore it is called "the day of the first-fruits (Yom HaBikkurim)."

Shavuos is the day of first-fruits precisely because it is the time when the Torah's fresh fruits are given anew.

And as is brought in the Midrash, that all the prophets and sages received their portion in the Torah at Har Sinai, only that their words were later articulated, each one in his proper time.

Every future teaching of every sage was already given at Sinai; it merely waited to be revealed through each person at his appointed moment.

So too, on every Chag HaShavuos, the time of the giving of our Torah, Bnei Yisrael receive the portion of the Torah that is renewed for all the days of the year, and afterward they bring it from potential into actuality, each one in his place and his time.

Each Shavuos, Bnei Yisrael are granted the Torah-renewal meant for the entire coming year, which they then actualize, each according to his own place and moment.

And this renewal depends on the preparation of each person.

How much of this fresh Torah-light one receives depends entirely on how he prepares himself.

And to this they alluded, "Prepare yourself to learn Torah, for it is not an inheritance to you" — that each one should prepare himself to receive a portion of the Torah that is renewed each year, which is not an inheritance but is renewed at every moment.

This resolves the contradiction: the fixed body of Torah is indeed an inheritance, but the fresh, renewed Torah of each year is not — it must be earned through personal preparation.

And this day is the root of the Torah for the entire year.

Shavuos is the source from which the whole year's Torah flows.

Therefore the Two Loaves (Shtei HaLechem) come as chametz, as the Zohar HaKadosh says, that in it is the nullification of the yetzer hara.

Uniquely, the Shavuos offering uses leavened bread — representing the yetzer hara — to teach that this is the day the yetzer hara is subdued.

And this is along the lines of what they said in the Gemara: "If this vile one (the yetzer hara) accosts you, drag him to the beis hamidrash; if he is stone, he will dissolve; if he is iron, he will shatter."

The remedy for the yetzer hara is Torah study, which breaks down even the hardest resistance, whether it be like stone or like iron.

And since this day is the root of the Torah, it is [the day of] the nullification of the yetzer hara, for the Torah is the antidote (tavlin) against the yetzer hara.

Because Shavuos is the root of all Torah, and Torah is the cure for the yetzer hara, this is the day on which the yetzer hara is nullified.

And the two matters, stone and iron, correspond to the aspects of positive mitzvos (mitzvos asei) and negative mitzvos (mitzvos lo sa'aseh).

The two images describe two ways the yetzer hara works against us — one against positive mitzvos, one against prohibitions.

"Stone" is that which dulls the heart like a stone, so that it will not receive the light of the mitzvos.

The yetzer hara hardens the heart, blocking the light of the positive mitzvos — this is the "stone."

And against this the Torah is called "water," and the stone is dissolved by it, as it says, "water wears away stones" — and it softens a person's heart to receive the light of the mitzvos.

Torah as "water" gradually wears down the hardened heart, softening it to absorb the light of the positive mitzvos.

"Iron" is the damage caused regarding negative mitzvos, and against this the Torah is called "fire," "Is not My word like fire… and like a hammer that shatters rock."

The "iron" of transgressing prohibitions is met by the Torah's "fire," which shatters and burns away that damage.

For the fire burns and consumes the dross and repairs the blemish, as it says, "[the Torah of Hashem is perfect,] restoring the soul."

Torah's fire incinerates the spiritual impurity caused by sin, restoring and healing the soul.

And the hint to this is that "even a partition of iron does not separate between Yisrael and their Father in Heaven."

The Torah's power is such that even the hardest barrier — "iron" — cannot sever the bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem.

And this is in accordance with one's engagement in Torah, for then they are called "children," and the partition does not separate, as above.

Through immersion in Torah, Bnei Yisrael earn the status of Hashem's children — and as His children, no barrier can ever divide them from Him.

Summary: Although the Torah is an "inheritance," its fresh renewal each year is not inherited but must be earned through personal preparation — and Shavuos, the day of first-fruits, is when this yearly renewal of the Torah, the Tree of Life, is given as the root of the whole year's Torah. Because Torah is the antidote to the yetzer hara, Shavuos (whose Two Loaves are chametz) is the day the yetzer hara is nullified: as "water," the Torah softens the heart hardened like stone against positive mitzvos; as "fire," it shatters the "iron" damage of transgression. Through such engagement in Torah, Bnei Yisrael become Hashem's children, whom no barrier can separate from Him.
