Living above nature and the spies' failure of emunah
Shlach · meraglim · above nature · emunah · Eretz Yisrael
On the verse "We shall surely go up," Rashi explains: even if it were in the heavens and He said make ladders, we would succeed in all His words.
Calev declared that even if entering the Land required ascending to the heavens by ladders, following Hashem's word would guarantee success — for Hashem's directives never fail.
For certainly, by natural means they could not have entered Eretz Yisrael, as the spies saw.
The meraglim were correct that, by ordinary natural reckoning, conquering the Land was impossible.
However, all the conduct of the generation of the wilderness was above nature, for everything below has a root above.
The dor hamidbar lived entirely on a supernatural plane; and since every earthly thing has a spiritual root above, conquering the Land was to be accomplished from that higher root.
And concerning Eretz Yisrael and Yerushalayim given to Bnei Yisrael, it is written in Parashas Masei, "This is the land that shall fall to you" — and we explained there that when they would conquer the earthly Eretz Yisrael, the upper portion would be given to them, in the manner of "like a city joined together."
The earthly Land is paired with a heavenly counterpart. Normally, conquering the physical Land draws down its supernal portion — as Yerushalayim "below" is joined to Yerushalayim "above."
However, had the generation of the wilderness entered through the power of Moshe Rabbeinu, they would first have conquered the upper Eretz Yisrael, and by that power the lower Eretz Yisrael would have been handed over to them.
With Moshe leading, the order would have been reversed: by first conquering the heavenly Land through supernatural means, the physical Land would have fallen to them effortlessly.
Therefore, even though below the time had not yet arrived — as several reasons are given for why they delayed forty years in the wilderness — all this pertains only to the manner of conquest from below; and as is written elsewhere, "to everything there is a season and a time… under the heavens."
The various reasons for the forty-year delay apply only to a natural, "from below" conquest, which is bound by time. The verse "a time for everything under the heavens" (Koheles 3:1) implies that above the heavens, such timing constraints do not apply.
But above time — which is the way of Torah, alluded to by "there is no earlier or later in the Torah" — they could have entered at any moment.
The Torah's realm transcends chronological order ("ein mukdam u'me'uchar baTorah"). Had they followed the supernatural path of Torah, no waiting period would have bound them, and they could have entered immediately.
And in the Midrash, on the verse "How long will they not believe… despite all the signs…," this is the meaning of "you spurned all My counsel… I said, you are godly beings…"
The Midrash links Hashem's frustration that they "did not believe despite all the signs" to the verse "you spurned all My counsel" (Mishlei 1:25) and "I said you are godly beings" (Tehillim 82:6) — Bnei Yisrael had been raised to an angelic, godly level but rejected it.
For He who declares the end from the beginning prepared the conduct of the wilderness generation in a manner above nature, as it is written, "He did not lead them… by way of the land of the Pelishtim… lest they reconsider… when they see war" — this refers to the war of Amalek, as it says here, "Amalek dwells in the land of the south" — therefore He raised them up from above the way of nature.
Hashem deliberately led them on a supernatural path rather than the natural route, foreseeing that confronting war (Amalek) by natural means would make them want to return to Mitzrayim. So He elevated them above nature entirely.
And ten miracles were performed for our forefathers in order to draw them out from all ten utterances, which are clothed within the work of creation and nature.
The ten miracles at the Yam Suf and in Mitzrayim corresponded to the ten Divine utterances of creation, lifting Bnei Yisrael beyond the natural order woven from those utterances.
And in truth, in the merit of the ten trials with which Avraham Avinu was tested, by which he transcended all of nature, Hashem repaid his reward and raised the conduct of Bnei Yisrael above nature.
Avraham passed ten tests, rising above natural limitations; as his reward, his descendants were granted a mode of existence above nature.
And had we drawn ourselves after this path, there would have been no galus, and no nation or tongue would rule over us.
Had Bnei Yisrael clung to this supernatural path, they would never have fallen into exile or under the dominion of any foreign power.
But it is written, "and they tested Me… ten times…"
Instead, Bnei Yisrael tested Hashem ten times in the wilderness (Bamidbar 14:22), corresponding to and undoing those ten miracles.
Concerning this it is expounded, "you spurned all My counsel," for they damaged all ten miracles that were done for them, and they were handed back into nature.
By testing Hashem ten times, they blemished the ten miracles and forfeited their supernatural elevation, sinking back into the constraints of the natural world.
Therefore He complained of them, "they do not believe… despite all the signs…"
Hashem's grievance was that, despite all the miraculous signs they had witnessed, they still failed to trust Him enough to live above nature.
And although they were believers, the children of believers, they did not draw themselves entirely after His higher mode of conduct.
Their basic emunah was intact, but they did not fully surrender themselves to live by the supernatural standard Hashem had opened for them.
And this was the essence of the mission, "Send for yourself," to see whether they would draw themselves after this path so that Moshe Rabbeinu could enter with them.
The true purpose of sending the spies was to test whether Bnei Yisrael were ready to follow the supernatural path under Moshe's leadership and thereby enter the Land directly.
[And it appears that for this reason Moshe Rabbeinu did not pray that they should enter; for after he saw from the words of the spies that they were not drawing themselves after this path, he knew it was impossible for them to enter, and he asked only that He forgive their sin, as it says, "I have forgiven, according to your word."
Moshe did not even daven for them to enter the Land, since the spies' report revealed the people were not ready for the supernatural path; he prayed only for forgiveness, which Hashem granted.
And it appears that on account of this, Korach and his assembly disputed, for they knew that he had asked for nothing more.
Korach's faction may have seized on the fact that Moshe did not pray for their entry into the Land, using it as a grievance against him.
But Moshe Rabbeinu is the faithful shepherd (ra'aya mehemna) and a faithful servant to Hashem, and he is true and his Torah is true.]
Despite Korach's complaint, Moshe acted with complete faithfulness; his conduct and his Torah are entirely true.
And in truth, were it not for the miracles done for them in the wilderness, they would have returned to Mitzrayim, as we find in Parashas Devarim that Moshe Rabbeinu rebuked them by force of these miracles in the wilderness, "where He carried you…"
Only the ongoing miracles in the wilderness kept Bnei Yisrael from retreating to Mitzrayim; Moshe later reminded them how Hashem "carried" them like a father carries a son (Devarim 1:31).
Therefore he at least accomplished that they did not return to Mitzrayim.
Even though they could not enter the Land, Moshe's leadership and the miracles ensured that they did not regress all the way back to Egypt.
And had they believed as they should have, they would have entered the Land immediately.
Complete emunah in Hashem's supernatural guidance would have brought them straight into Eretz Yisrael without delay.
Summary: The Sefas Emes teaches that the dor hamidbar was meant to live entirely above nature. Had they followed Moshe's supernatural path with full emunah — first conquering the heavenly Eretz Yisrael — the physical Land would have fallen to them at once, with no galus and no nation ruling over them, since the realm of Torah transcends time. The true purpose of sending the spies was to test this readiness. Because Bnei Yisrael "tested Hashem ten times" and failed to cling entirely to His higher conduct, they damaged the ten miracles, sank back into nature, and forfeited immediate entry — yet Moshe's faithful leadership at least kept them from returning to Mitzrayim.
