Holy Sparks Among the Nations
“And Abraham again took a wife, etc.”
The verse introduces a new stage in Abraham’s life after the story of Sarah, hinting at continued spiritual growth and expansion.
In the Midrash it is said, “His leaf shall not wither,” etc. For the essential seed of Israel, which was destined to come forth from Abraham, peace be upon him, is not in itself a great wonder.
The Midrash compares Abraham to a tree whose leaf does not wither. The Sefat Emet explains that the emergence of Israel from Abraham was predetermined and therefore not the remarkable aspect of his greatness.
But the true greatness of the righteous one lies in the addition, as it is written: “And I will add to all your praise.”
The distinction of a tzaddik is not only in fulfilling what is decreed, but in adding holiness and praise beyond what is required.
This is the aspect of adding from the weekday onto the holy.
Just as one extends the sanctity of Shabbat into the weekday, so the tzaddik extends holiness into ordinary life.
There is an addition both at the entrance of Shabbat and at its departure.
Holiness expands in both directions—before and after Shabbat—symbolizing continual spiritual growth.
So too there is an aspect of added holiness before Shabbat and after Shabbat.
This repetition emphasizes that sanctity is not confined to time but radiates outward, sustaining the days surrounding it.
And this is the sustaining of the weekdays through the illumination of the holy Shabbat, as is known to those who understand.
The light of Shabbat nourishes and upholds the weekdays, giving them spiritual vitality.
And likewise, there was the aspect of the son of the maidservant before the birth of Isaac.
Just as the weekdays precede Shabbat, so Ishmael, the son of Hagar, preceded Isaac, preparing the way for the holy seed.
And the sons of Keturah came after the birth of Isaac.
After the main sanctity was revealed through Isaac, additional sparks of holiness emerged through Keturah’s children.
In truth, this was a preparation so that the children of Israel could endure among the nations, as our sages said: Abraham refined for himself the kingdoms.
Abraham’s interactions with other nations established a spiritual foundation that would later allow Israel to exist and find holiness even in exile.
He prepared the way to find illumination and sparks of holiness among the nations.
Abraham’s spiritual work uncovered divine sparks hidden within the world’s peoples, enabling future generations to redeem them.
These are the aspect of the converts who were later added to the children of Israel.
The converts represent those sparks of holiness drawn back to their source through Israel’s influence.
They are called “secondary growths,” not the principal seed.
Though not the original seed of Israel, they grow from its sanctity and are nourished by it.
Therefore they hinted that their deeds are pleasing like incense, as is said concerning the inclusion of galbanum among the ingredients of the incense.
Even those who come from outside Israel contribute a unique fragrance to divine service, just as the bitter galbanum completes the incense’s harmony.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that Abraham’s greatness lay in adding holiness beyond what was decreed—extending sanctity into the ordinary, preparing the world for Israel’s endurance among the nations, and revealing divine sparks even through those not of the original seed.
