Torah as Inner Daily Renewal

Chayei Sarah · תרמ"א (1880) · Essay 1

In the Midrash it is said: “The Lord knows the days of the wholehearted; just as they are whole, so their years are whole.”

The verse teaches that the completeness of the righteous extends not only to their character but also to the span of their lives, which are filled and perfected by divine providence.

As it is written: “I will fill the number of your days.”

This verse supports the idea that God Himself completes the measure of the righteous person’s life.

Our sages interpreted: The Holy One, blessed be He, sits and fills the years of the righteous, day by day.

Each day is not merely passing time but a divine act of completion, as God continually grants fullness to the lives of the righteous.

The matter is that the Blessed Creator renews the work of Creation every day.

Creation is not a single event of the past but an ongoing renewal, a continuous act of divine vitality.

And since there is renewal each day in the natural world, which is the outer aspect,

The visible world itself is constantly refreshed by divine energy, showing that renewal is woven into existence.

How much more so is there renewal in every soul of Israel each day through the power of the Torah, as it is written: “I command you today,” etc.

Just as nature is renewed, so too the inner life of Israel is renewed daily through Torah, which is the channel of divine vitality.

Upon this idea the psalm “The heavens declare…” is founded: “Day to day pours forth speech,” even though “there is no speech nor words.”

The heavens silently proclaim renewal; each day communicates divine revelation without audible words, reflecting the hidden renewal within creation.

How much more so for the children of Israel, for the Torah is the inner essence of all things.

Israel, bound to the Torah, experiences renewal not only in the outer world but in the innermost spiritual dimension.

And therefore the psalm concludes, “The Torah of the Lord, the commandment of the Lord,” etc. [Hence our sages established the blessings of Yotzer and Ahavah before the Shema, corresponding to these two aspects mentioned above.]

The blessings before the Shema reflect both the outer renewal of creation (Yotzer) and the inner renewal through Torah and love (Ahavah).

For the days are vessels to receive the illuminations; they are the outer aspect, while the Torah is the inner aspect, as stated above.

Time itself serves as a container for divine light, but Torah is the inner content that fills and sanctifies those vessels.

It is written: “God called the light Day,” and our sages said: He called to the light and appointed it as the command of the day, etc.

The naming of “Day” signifies that light was designated to be a vessel for divine command and illumination.

That is, He placed within nature that the days themselves should be vessels to receive the illuminations.

Time was structured by God to be receptive to spiritual light, not merely a neutral flow of moments.

And through the righteous who engage in the service of God, the light of the Torah is drawn into nature.

The righteous act as conduits, channeling divine illumination into the physical world, sanctifying the natural order.

This is the meaning of “the number of your days”—that is, the light of the days.

The “number” refers not to quantity but to the spiritual measure of light filling each day.

Then they are whole when the illuminations are filled within them, for they are only vessels, as stated above.

Days become complete when they are filled with divine light; their perfection depends on the inner illumination they receive.

Behold, the end of the world is to be destroyed, but the days of the righteous will endure forever.

Physical creation is transient, yet the sanctified time of the righteous, filled with divine light, remains eternal.

This is what is meant by “Their inheritance shall be forever,” for their years are precious before the Holy One, blessed be He, in this world and in the world to come.

The righteous transform their lifetime into an everlasting inheritance, beloved by God in both realms.

And just as the righteous break the power of nature and nullify their own physicality for the sake of the Creator’s command, blessed be He,

Through self-transcendence and devotion, the righteous rise above natural limitation, dedicating their being entirely to divine will.

So too they have the power to transform nature and elevate time to cleave to its supernal root.

By sanctifying their actions, they uplift the very fabric of time, connecting it to its divine source.

Therefore it is written of him, “He came with his days,” meaning that he elevated all his days to be enduring forever.

Abraham’s life is described as “coming with his days” because each day was sanctified and thus became eternal.
