From Servant to Beloved Son
And in the Midrash it is said: “The conversation of the servants of the Patriarchs is more pleasing than the Torah of their descendants.”
The Midrash marvels that the Torah records at length the words of the Patriarchs’ servants, while many laws of the Torah are only hinted at. This teaches that even the simple speech of those attached to holiness carries great value.
And this is a wonder.
The Sefat Emet expresses amazement at this teaching, for it seems paradoxical that the words of servants should surpass the Torah of their children.
But it is like what our sages said: “Better is one hour of repentance and good deeds in this world.”
He draws a parallel to the teaching that the actions performed in this world, though transient, are precious before God because they are done amidst concealment and struggle.
For it is beloved before the Blessed One when people sanctify themselves for His service in this world.
The holiness that arises from human effort within the physical world is especially dear to God, for it transforms the mundane into divine service.
So too, the aspect of the servant is a preparation and an antechamber to the aspect of the son.
The state of serving God out of duty and faithfulness is the necessary stage that leads to the higher state of serving as a beloved child, out of closeness and love.
And I heard from my grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, that one should learn from this portion how to emerge from the category of “cursed.”
He transmits a teaching from his grandfather, the Chidushei HaRim, that this story teaches how a person can rise from a lowly state to blessing through faithful service.
By serving that righteous one with faithfulness.
The servant of Abraham, through loyal service, was elevated from a cursed lineage to blessing. Faithful service to holiness transforms one’s essence.
How much more so the servants of God—if they engage in faithfulness, they will afterward merit to enter the aspect of the son, and so forth.
If a human servant could be uplifted through faith, surely those who serve God with steadfast faith will be elevated to the level of children, beloved and close to Him.
This corresponds to the aspect of the weekdays, the aspect of speech, and the aspect of the servant.
The weekdays, filled with worldly labor and conversation, represent the servant’s state—serving through action and faith amid concealment.
And through this one then merits the aspect of the Sabbath.
Faithful service during the weekdays prepares the soul to experience the holiness and rest of the Sabbath, which is the revelation of closeness to God.
For in it dwells blessing.
The Sabbath is the source of blessing, the time when divine favor rests upon all creation.
And this is the aspect of the son and the aspect of Torah—ponder this well and you will understand.
The Sabbath and the Torah both express the state of the son—intimacy and unity with the Divine. The Sefat Emet concludes by urging contemplation to grasp this inner connection.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the humble service of the “servant” prepares one for the intimacy of the “son.” Faithful action in the mundane world, like the servant of Abraham, transforms curse into blessing and leads to the sanctity of Sabbath and Torah, where divine closeness and blessing dwell.
