Nullifying to Inner Vitality

Noach · תרל"ג (1872) · Essay 3

You formed Your world from the beginning, etc.

The Sefat Emet opens by affirming that creation begins from a primordial, inner divine root.

The form of all created beings is spiritual.

The essence of every creature exists first as a spiritual prototype.

And all physicality is only a garment and metaphor for the inner essence.

The physical world is not the core; it merely expresses deeper spiritual life.

Therefore on Shabbat, when Creation was completed, the essential divine will is revealed.

Shabbat uncovers the original inner desire behind creation.

Therefore on Shabbat the inner vitality is always revealed.

Shabbat renews access to the spiritual core animating the world.

As it is written: “The gate of the inner courtyard shall be closed… but on the Sabbath and on the new moon it shall be opened.”

This verse teaches that Shabbat opens the gateway to inner holiness.

And one’s will must constantly strive to nullify itself to the inner essence, the gate facing east.

The person must orient himself toward the inner spiritual gate.

And by including himself within the community of Israel, a person can attach himself to that gate.

Connection to the collective soul of Israel enables access to the inner divine source.

And so it is written in the Zohar regarding the generation of the Dispersion: “As they journeyed from the east—from the Ancient One of the world.”

The generation of the Tower separated themselves from the primordial divine root.

This means they sought only physicality and not the inner vitality.

Their rebellion was a refusal to connect with spiritual essence.

And because they were united and spoke the holy tongue, God said: “Nothing will be withheld from them.”

Their unity gave them great power, even though misdirected.

How much more so Israel, who desire to cleave to the inner essence, to the Ancient One of the world, and who engage in Torah and mitzvot—they must strengthen themselves in God, Who will certainly help them.

If even misdirected unity is powerful, holy unity is vastly more so.

In truth, this capacity for attachment remained with Israel.

The gift of true unity persisted only among Israel.

The generation of the Dispersion became divided and lost their unity.

Their punishment matched their flaw: refusal of unity led to the stripping of unity.

Since they refused to attach themselves to the root of vitality, which is unity, they are called the Generation of Dispersion.

True life is rooted in oneness; rejecting it leads to fragmentation.

But Israel remained in unity, as it is written: “Remember the days of old… when He separated mankind, He set the boundaries according to the number of Israel, for the Lord’s portion is His people.”

Israel’s unity is tied to its divine-rooted identity.

And this is truly the aspect of the giving of the Torah to Israel, which is in the holy tongue and is the place of unity.

The Torah itself is the language and locus of spiritual oneness.

The Sefat Emet teaches that inner spiritual unity is the essence of creation and is revealed on Shabbat. Israel retains the power of true unity, unlike the generation of the Tower, because they seek to connect to the primordial divine root through Torah and mitzvot.
