Guarding the Covenant Within

Noach · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 2

“Read: ‘Noach, Noach, a righteous man…’ In the Zohar: Noach is the aspect of Shabbat.”

The Sefat Emet opens by linking Noach to Shabbat, indicating that Noach embodies the spiritual root of rest, wholeness, and inner connection.

It is taught: “One who guards the covenant is called a tzaddik.”

A tzaddik is one who preserves the spiritual covenant, maintaining purity and alignment with the divine source.

The covenant means the connection of all creation to its root.

The Sefat Emet defines the covenant as the force linking every created thing back to its origin above.

For every thing has a root above.

Everything in the world reflects a higher spiritual source from which it derives.

And so it is with the human being, who rules over all that is on earth, as it is said: “You placed everything under his feet.”

Humanity’s dominion stems from its position as mediator between higher and lower realms.

And according to how one guards one’s power, not directing it except to what truly belongs to it, so too is power drawn to that person from above.

Proper spiritual restraint enables a reciprocal flow of divine energy from higher worlds.

And so with all creation, as it is written: “Which God created to do.”

Creation is structured to continue unfolding when its inner connections are maintained.

Meaning: through Shabbat all things reconnect to their roots, and therefore they all produce fruit.

Shabbat restores alignment, allowing vitality and productivity to flow naturally.

For when the covenantal connection is maintained, it generates offspring.

Creativity and renewal emerge from spiritual connection.

Therefore on Shabbat a person receives an extra soul, because within him all things reconnect to their root.

The “extra soul” is the heightened awareness that comes from restored cosmic harmony.

And behold, on Shabbat we cease from labor, and this is freedom for the soul.

Shabbat liberates the inner self from the burdens of physical activity.

But a person was created in this world to repair the soul, and this occurs through deeds done in partnership of body and soul.

Spiritual refinement requires engagement with the physical world.

And then he merits the (extra) soul on Shabbat.

The elevation gained through weekday effort is crowned with Shabbat insight.

And because the power of the other side and physicality greatly burden a person…

The struggle with materiality drains spiritual strength during the week.

Shabbat was given to us as a gift, to rest in it.

Shabbat is divine relief from the pressures of earthly existence.

And so indeed was the Ark of Noach, which was free from labor.

The Ark functioned like Shabbat: a suspended, protected state.

Yet it is said about Noach: “Bring my soul out of confinement,” for the soul was in confinement, as explained above.

Even in the Ark’s tranquility, the deeper inner soul remained held back.

And it is written: “The six days of labor shall be closed…”

The weekdays represent a closed state in which inner light is hidden.

For the gate of inwardness opens only when the covenantal connection is present, and this is on Shabbat.

True inner access is possible only when spiritual alignment is restored.

And when this connection arrives, the aspect of “doing” is nullified.

Action yields to being; the mode of effort gives way to inner revelation.

Then the inner root opens, as stated above, and the weekdays become closed.

Shabbat reveals the hidden core, while weekday consciousness recedes.

Summary: Noach symbolizes Shabbat, the state where creation reconnects to its spiritual root. Guarding the covenant sustains this connection, generating vitality and renewal. Shabbat grants liberation to the soul and reveals inner depth, while the weekdays remain a closed realm of effort and concealment.
