Awakening Before Divine Help

Noach · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 3

In Rashi: Noah required support, etc.

The Sefat Emet begins by citing Rashi’s comment that Noah needed divine assistance.

Surely every person requires the help of the Creator.

He explains that dependence on God is universal and not unique to Noah.

Only Abraham received help as a result of his own good deeds.

Abraham’s spiritual efforts generated divine assistance from below upward.

And this is what is meant by “I walked before Him,” meaning he merited this aid through his own awakening.

Abraham initiated his spiritual movement, and God responded with lasting support.

But with Noah, the awakening from Heaven preceded his own awakening.

Noah’s spiritual growth was initiated from above, indicating a weaker human initiative.

And as is known, when human awakening comes first, it endures forever.

Actions begun by human effort have greater permanence than those begun from above.

Yet everything depends on a person's free choice.

The capacity to initiate spiritual effort lies within human will.

For one who wishes to accept the yoke of service with full strength—

A person’s sincere desire to serve God activates divine aid.

The Holy One helps him so that he can fulfill everything on his own.

God’s assistance empowers the person to act as if independently.

Even though he is still supported by the Creator.

Human independence is only apparent; divine aid underlies all success.

But the assistance is in a manner that he performs it on his own, for God is all‑powerful.

God can grant aid without diminishing the sense of personal agency.

And one whose strength is weak, as we find: “I have no strength to pursue,” etc.

For those lacking the capacity for strong effort, Scripture acknowledges human weakness.

Then the Holy One helps him in another way, and everything is from God, as stated above.

God provides tailored assistance according to each person’s capacity; all support ultimately originates from Him.

Summary: The Sefat Emet contrasts Noah and Abraham: Abraham initiated spiritual effort and therefore received enduring, empowering divine aid, while Noah’s awakening came from above. Human initiative determines the quality of divine assistance, yet all help ultimately comes from God.
