Reclaiming Lost Unity

Noach · תרל"ז (1876) · Essay 4

“Regarding the generation of the dispersion, the teaching of the Mishnah was fulfilled: a gathering that is not for the sake of Heaven will not endure, and so He took from them the power of unity and the power of the holy tongue.”

The Sefat Emet explains that the downfall of the Tower of Babel generation illustrates the principle that unity devoid of divine purpose cannot last, and therefore the very forces that bound them together were removed.

“But for the Children of Israel, whose unity is for the sake of Heaven, it endures.”

In contrast, Israel’s unity is rooted in a higher intention, so it is preserved and strengthened.

“And in truth, all was for the benefit of the Children of Israel, for surely the Creator knew that such unity was not good for them; so why did He give it to them and then take it back? Only so that Israel would come afterward and find that unity, as explained elsewhere.”

The temporary gift and removal of unity from the earlier generation was a deliberate divine preparation, leaving behind a latent spiritual resource that Israel could later reclaim in its proper, sanctified form.

Summary: The flawed unity of the Tower of Babel collapsed because it lacked divine purpose, whereas Israel’s unity endures. Even the earlier generation’s brief experience of unity was ultimately arranged for Israel’s future benefit.
