Noach's Need for Support
את האלקים כו' נח הי' צריך סעד כו' אם הכוונה על סעד מהבורא ית' וכי נמצא מי שאינו צריך סעד עליון.
“‘With God…’ Noah needed support… If the intention is support from the Creator, is there anyone who does not need divine support?”
The Sefat Emet asks: if the verse means Noah required God’s help, that is obvious—every human being requires divine assistance. Thus the phrase must be pointing to something more specific.
וי"ל כי כוונתם לדרוש את האלקים שהי' צריך עוד סעד מזכותים אחרים וגם מדורות העתידים.
“One may say their intent in interpreting ‘with God’ is that he needed additional support—through the merits of others and also from future generations.”
The teaching clarifies that Noah required reinforcement beyond his own spiritual standing, drawing strength from the accumulated merits of others, including those who would arise in later generations.
ובאברהם כתיב התהלכתי לפניו ובנח את לרבות כנ"ל:
“Concerning Abraham it is written: ‘I walked before Him,’ while regarding Noah it says ‘with’—to include the above idea.”
The distinction in wording between Abraham and Noah reflects their differing spiritual capacities: Abraham walked independently before God, whereas Noah required the additional supportive ‘with,’ indicating reliance on external merits.
Summary: The Sefat Emet explains that Noah’s ‘walking with God’ signifies not ordinary divine help, but a need for extra support from the merits of others and of future generations, unlike Abraham who stood on his own spiritual strength.
