In the Midrash on "Come into the teivah (ark)."

The Sefas Emes begins from the Midrash on Hashem's command to Noach to enter the ark.

This is what is written: "You destroy those who speak falsehood" (Tehillim 5:7).

The Midrash links Noach's entry into the ark to this pasuk that speaks of the ruin of liars — the generation of the Flood, whose lives were built on falsehood.

"But as for me, through Your abundant chesed…" — as it is written, "And Noach found favor" (Bereishis 6:8).

Against the liars who are destroyed stands the one who, "through Your abundant kindness," is sustained — Noach, who found chein (favor) in Hashem's eyes.

Chazal expounded: he was not deserving in his own right, but that he found favor.

Noach was saved not strictly by merit but because he found chein — a gift of grace rather than a wage earned.

And in truth this is a person's avodah — to find favor in His eyes; then Hashem assists those who walk in temimus (wholeheartedness). This is the aspect of Shabbos, which is called a "gift," as the Zohar HaKadosh states that Noach is Shabbos.

Our avodah is to make ourselves into a vessel of chein before Hashem; once we do, He helps the wholehearted. This grace-given help is the quality of Shabbos — a matanah (gift) from Above rather than an earned wage — and the Zohar identifies Noach (whose name means rest/menuchah) with Shabbos.

And perhaps this is what Chazal meant: it arose in [His] thought to create [the world] with the attribute of strict justice (midas hadin), and He saw that the world could not endure, so He joined to it the attribute of mercy (midas harachamim).

A world governed only by exact justice — wages strictly for deeds — cannot stand. So Hashem partnered din with rachamim, the dimension of grace and gift, which is what lets creation survive.

That is, the assistance found on Shabbos Kodesh, whereby an illumination is drawn from the upper world, above nature.

The "mercy" that lets the world endure is exactly the Shabbos help — a light drawn down from the higher world that transcends the fixed measure of nature.

For it is written "Elokim created" — implying that in actual deed it was created with strict justice; only that He first joined mercy to it, namely that creation should have deveikus (attachment) to the world of mercy, which comes about through Shabbos. Therefore, after Shabbos it is written, "These are the generations… on the day that Hashem Elokim made [earth and heaven]."

The Name "Elokim" (justice) in the work of creation shows the world was made under din; but mercy was joined in first, so that creation would cling to the world of rachamim — and that bond is forged through Shabbos. Hence only after the seventh day does the Torah pair the Name of mercy (Havayah) with Elokim, "Hashem Elokim."

This is the berachah of which it is written, "And He blessed the seventh day" — that in proportion to one's toil during the weekdays, one merits on Shabbos Kodesh to blessing and to deveikus in the upper root, where all is mercy.

The blessing placed in Shabbos rewards the week's labor: the harder one toils in avodah during the weekdays, the more Shabbos draws him up to cling to the supernal root, which is wholly rachamim.

And Shabbos is the sustaining of everything.

Shabbos is what gives all of creation its endurance.

Therefore we say [of Shabbos]: "a remembrance of the work of creation," "first among the holy convocations," "a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt."

The Shabbos liturgy ties together three remembrances — creation, the festivals, and yetzias Mitzrayim — corresponding to the three realms that Shabbos elevates.

For there are three aspects: olam (world/space), shanah (year/time), and nefesh (soul).

All of reality is structured along three axes — space, time, and soul — the classic framework of Sefer Yetzirah.

And Shabbos elevates creation, and time, and souls, so that they should have deveikus in Hashem.

Each of the three axes — the created world, time, and the souls — is lifted by Shabbos into attachment with Hashem: creation through "the work of creation," time through "first of the holy convocations," and souls through "a remembrance of the Exodus."

Only that one must be a prepared vessel to receive Shabbos.

But this elevation requires that a person make himself a fitting keili (vessel) ready to receive the Shabbos light.

And this was the difference: the generation of the Flood were wicked and are called "speakers of falsehood," for they had no desire to come to the truth; whereas Noach sought and yearned, and found favor in Hashem's eyes.

The Flood generation refused to make themselves vessels for truth, so they were the "liars" who are destroyed. Noach, by contrast, longed and reached toward Hashem — and that very yearning made him the vessel that found chein and was preserved.

Summary: A person's avodah is to become a vessel of chein before Hashem; this grace — the partnering of mercy with justice — is the secret of Shabbos, the "gift" (identified by the Zohar with Noach/menuchah) through which world, time, and soul are sustained and drawn into deveikus with their supernal root. The Flood generation, "speakers of falsehood," refused to be such a vessel and perished, while Noach yearned for truth, found favor, and was saved.
