Finding holy letters in concealed places
The Sages said that he instituted the evening prayer (Tefillas Arvis).
Chazal teach that Yaakov Avinu established the nighttime tefillah, and the Sefas Emes will explain why this corresponds specifically to him and to Parshas Vayeitzei.
For Parshas Vayeitzei is what Yaakov Avinu prepared — a rectification and a pathway even for one who does not merit to be "inside."
By going out from his father's house into exile, Yaakov forged a way for those who cannot remain in the sheltered place of holiness — a tikkun for the one who finds himself on the outside.
As in our own generations, when we have been driven out from the house of our life.
Yaakov's departure mirrors our condition in galus, exiled from the Bais Hamikdash, the "house of our life" — and shows that even there a path of avodah remains open.
And in truth, in every place a rectification is to be found through the power of the Torah.
No matter where a person is cast, the Torah provides the means to repair and uplift that place; there is nowhere beyond the reach of its power.
And this is the aspect of Yaakov Avinu: "Grant truth to Yaakov" (Michah 7:20) — and "truth" is nothing other than Torah.
Yaakov is the embodiment of emes (truth), which is the Torah; this is why the power to find rectification everywhere is specifically his trait.
And the Torah grants a place and an existence to every thing, concerning which the Sages said: "there is nothing that does not have its place" (Avos 4:3).
The Torah is the source that gives each created thing its proper place and sustains its existence — nothing in the world is without a rooted place granted to it by the Torah.
And this is the meaning of "and he encountered the place" (Bereishis 28:11).
Yaakov "met the Place" — a hint that he connected to the underlying spiritual "place" that the Torah gives to everything; "HaMakom" (the Place) is also a Name of Hashem.
"From the stones of the place" — my grandfather, of blessed memory, explained that the letters are called "stones."
Citing his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim), the Sefas Emes notes that the "stones" Yaakov gathered allude to the letters of the Torah, which the Sefer Yetzirah likens to building-stones.
And in every place there are found impressions and letters of the Torah.
The "letters" of Torah — the divine sparks and traces by which all things are created — are embedded in every place in the world, even the lowest.
However, in some places there is greater revelation, such as Eretz Yisrael and the Bais Hamikdash, where His Name, may He be blessed, is called upon.
In holy places like Eretz Yisrael and the Bais Hamikdash, these divine letters shine openly, for Hashem's Name rests there in revealed fashion.
And there are places where it is in a state of confusion and concealment, and only the especially holy person is able to find the letters and arrange them — similar to what we find in the plain meaning of the Torah, where some passages are understood according to their simple sense and others require explanation.
In lowly, hidden places the holy letters are scrambled and concealed, so only a tzaddik of great kedushah can locate and reorder them — much as some Torah verses are clear on the surface while others must be unpacked through deeper interpretation.
And as in the principle of "we subtract and add letters and expound," and "the text is incomplete and must be supplemented," and so on.
Just as Chazal sometimes rearrange or supplement letters and words to draw out the Torah's meaning, so the tzaddik must "re-spell" the hidden divine letters in a concealed place to reveal the holiness within it.
And this is "and he took from the stones of the place and put them at his head" (Bereishis 28:11).
Yaakov gathering the "stones" and arranging them represents his taking the scattered divine letters of an unholy place and ordering them into a structure of holiness.
"Placing" denotes arranging, as in "and they shall put it on a pole" (Bamidbar 4:10).
The word "vayasem" (he put/placed) connotes deliberate arrangement and ordering, not mere placement — Yaakov was setting the letters into proper order.
And so too, "which I have set up as a pillar shall be a house of God" (Bereishis 28:22) — for he arranged and built from the letters a structure and a house.
By ordering the scattered letters, Yaakov transformed them into a "house of God"; out of the raw "stones" of a hidden place he constructed a dwelling for the Shechinah.
And this is the matter of his instituting the evening prayer.
Tefillas Arvis — prayer at night, in the time of darkness and concealment — is precisely Yaakov's work of finding and arranging the hidden divine letters in the dark places, drawing holiness out of concealment.
Summary: Parshas Vayeitzei reveals Yaakov Avinu's gift to all who, like us in galus, find themselves outside the place of holiness: through the power of the Torah — which is emes and which grants every thing its place — even the most concealed location contains scattered divine "letters." The uniquely holy person can locate and reorder these letters into a "house of God," and this is the essence of Tefillas Arvis, the prayer that draws holiness out of the darkness.
