"And he encountered the place" — Chazal expounded that Yaakov instituted the evening prayer (tefillas arvis).

From Yaakov's "encounter" with the place at night, the Gemara learns that he established Maariv, the prayer of the nighttime.

And see what was written in Parshas Chayei Sarah regarding the three prayers that the Avos instituted, each one according to his own middah (attribute).

Each of the three Avos established one of the daily tefillos in keeping with his own spiritual quality — a theme developed earlier.

And just as it is each day, so it is in the order of the generations: Avraham Avinu was the first, the aspect of ahavah (love), and he hints to the Bais Hamikdash that Shlomo Hamelech, peace be upon him, built.

The daily cycle of tefillos mirrors history. Avraham's middah of love corresponds to the first Bais Hamikdash, built by Shlomo in a time of revealed closeness to Hashem.

And the Second Bais Hamikdash was not in a revelation of love, but rather in the aspect of yirah (awe).

The second Temple stood in an era when the open love of the first was hidden, and avodah had to be sustained through yiras Shomayim instead.

And Yaakov, peace be upon him, is the aspect of emes (truth) that has no interruption, as was written there, and his repair extends until the final House will be built.

Yaakov's middah of truth never breaks off; his tikkun continues unbroken until the third and final Bais Hamikdash.

And Yaakov called it a "house," which is a more permanent structure than a "mountain" or a "field."

Avraham called the place a mountain and Yitzchak a field, but Yaakov called it a house — the most fixed and enduring of the three, matching his quality of unbroken truth.

And every day there is an illumination from the entire order of the generations.

Each single day contains a spark of all of history — love, awe, and truth alike shine within it.

For so it is with every act of the Creator, may He be blessed: it is included in every thing, a microcosm of the whole.

Everything Hashem makes contains within it a reflection of the entire creation; the part mirrors the whole.

And the two prayers, Shacharis and Minchah, are fixed times for tefillah, and they are an eis ratzon (time of favor), as is written in the holy Zohar on Balak, "they walked in darkness," that at the time of tefillah the darkness is driven out; and this is the meaning of "and they gathered and rolled the stone," as in "rolling away darkness before light," for when the inner fervor is revealed it becomes a time of favor when the tzibbur (congregation) prays.

The morning and afternoon tefillos have set times and are moments of Divine favor. Just as the shepherds rolled the stone off the well, communal tefillah rolls away the darkness, and the aroused enthusiasm of the praying congregation opens a window of closeness to Hashem.

The Sitra Achra (the "other side," the forces of impurity) flees.

At that revealed moment of favor during communal prayer, the forces of evil have no foothold and retreat.

But the evening prayer (tefillas arvis) has no fixed obligation, and its repair must take place within the admixture; and Yaakov Avinu, who is the man of truth, is able to reach the depth of the good even when it is intermingled.

Maariv, prayed at night, is not strictly obligatory like the day prayers, because its task is to find the good while it is still mixed with darkness. Yaakov, the man of emes, can penetrate to the inner good even amid that confusion.

This is "and he encountered the place" — meaning, in the penimiyus (inner dimension) of the place; and this is the matter of kefitzas ha'aretz (the "leaping" of the earth), as written elsewhere, that it is taught: "there is no person who does not have his hour, and no thing that does not have its place," and this hour every servant of Hashem can always find when he engages in Torah lishmah (for its own sake).

Yaakov "encountered" the inner core of the place — the same power by which the earth "leaped" to shorten his journey. Every person has his appointed moment and place, and one who toils in Torah purely for Hashem's sake can always access that inner point.

And we find by Yaakov that he had a "leaping" of place and time, for the sun set before its proper hour; therefore it is written of Yaakov "and he rolled" (vayagel), for he revealed (gilah) the true essence of the well from within the concealment itself.

Yaakov transcended both space and time — the sun set early for him. The word "vayagel" hints at revelation (gilui): Yaakov uncovered the well's true inner essence precisely from inside the hiddenness, which is the avodah of the man of truth.

Summary: The three daily tefillos and the three Batei Mikdash correspond to the Avos and their middos — Avraham's love, Yitzchak's awe, and Yaakov's unbroken truth. Yaakov's unique power, embodied in the unfixed nighttime Maariv, is the ability to reach the inner good and reveal Hashem's truth from within concealment and admixture itself, a power every Jew can tap through Torah lishmah.
