Yaakov's truth binds all time into redemption

במדרש נטל הקב"ה שיחתן של אבות ועשאן מפתח לגאולתן של בנים אתה אמרת והי' ה' לי לאלקים חייך כל טובות וברכות ונחמות שאני נותן לבניך בלשון הזה והי' ביום ההוא יצאו מים חיים.

In the Midrash: The Holy One, blessed is He, took the speech of the Avos and made it into a key for the redemption of their children. You [Yaakov] said, "And Hashem shall be to me a G-d" — by your life, all the goodness and blessings and consolations that I give to your children will be in this very expression: "And it shall be on that day that living waters shall go forth." (Zechariah 14:8)

The Midrash teaches that the words the Avos spoke became the template for future redemption. Yaakov's phrase "v'hayah" (and it shall be) becomes the language Hashem uses for all the future berachos and consolations of Bnei Yisrael.

והיה ביום ההוא יוסיף שנית ידו כו'.

"And it shall be on that day that Hashem will set His hand again a second time…" (Yeshayahu 11:11)

Another example of a future redemption introduced by the same word "v'hayah," showing how Yaakov's expression is woven into the prophecies of geulah.

דכתיב תתן אמת ליעקב אמת כולל מראשית עד אחרית אותיות אמ"ת.

For it is written, "You shall give truth (emes) to Yaakov." (Michah 7:20) "Emes" encompasses from beginning to end — the letters of emes (aleph, mem, taf span the alphabet).

The middah of Yaakov is emes (truth). The letters of the word emes — the first, middle, and last letters of the alef-beis — symbolize that truth spans the entire span of existence, from beginning to end.

ואיתא כי אות ו' נקרא אות אמת והוא מדת יעקב בריח התיכון והקב"ה אחד האמת שבחר באבות ובנ"י כל המתנות שנתן להם אינו במקרה רק הם מתחלת העולם ועד סופו.

And it is brought that the letter vav is called the letter of truth, and it is the middah of Yaakov — the "central bolt" (briach hatichon) — and the Holy One is the One True G-d who chose the Avos and Bnei Yisrael. All the gifts He gave them are not by chance, but are fixed from the beginning of the world until its end.

The letter vav, which connects, represents Yaakov, the middle of the Avos who unites all. Because Hashem is the absolute truth who chose the Avos, the gifts He gives are not accidents of circumstance but are built into creation from its very inception.

ואות ו' מהפך התיבה מעתיד לעבר ומעבר לעתיד יהי לשון עתיד ויהי לשון עבר.

And the letter vav transforms a word from future to past and from past to future: "yehi" is future tense, and "vayehi" (with a vav) is past tense.

In Hebrew grammar the conversive vav flips a verb's tense. The Sefas Emes draws meaning from this: the vav has the power to turn future into past and past into future.

הי' לשון עבר והי' לשון עתיד.

"Hayah" is past tense, and "v'hayah" (with a vav) is future tense.

The same grammatical flip applies here: the word Yaakov used, "v'hayah," is the past-tense "hayah" turned to the future by the vav.

לרמוז כי אות ו' שהיא כח התורה מחבר היה הוה ויהיה.

This hints that the letter vav, which is the power of the Torah, joins together "was, is, and will be" (hayah, hoveh, v'yihyeh).

The connecting vav, representing the power of Torah, binds all three tenses — past, present, and future — into one unified whole, which is the very Name of Hashem (Havayah).

ולכן כשיתקיימו ההבטחות אז יתברר למפרע כי הכל הי' לטובה.

Therefore, when the promises are fulfilled, then it will become clear retroactively that everything was for the good.

Because all times are bound together in truth, the future fulfillment of Hashem's promises will reveal, looking back, that even the painful past was always for the good.

ולכן נקרא הקב"ה בעל הנחמות כי הנחמות של בני אדם א"י לתקן כל הצער העבר.

Therefore the Holy One is called "the Master of consolations," for the consolations of human beings cannot repair all the pain of the past.

Human comfort can ease present pain but cannot undo what already happened. Hashem's consolation is of a wholly different order.

אבל הנחמה שיהי' מהקב"ה יהי' מהופך כל הצער לטובה.

But the consolation that will come from the Holy One will transform all the pain into good.

Hashem's ultimate nechamah does not merely soothe; it actually reverses the past, turning the very suffering itself into good.

והגם כי אין אנו מבינים איך יהי' מתהפך מה שעבר לפי שאנחנו בתוך הטבע והזמן.

And although we do not understand how that which has passed can be transformed — because we are within nature and time —

From inside the framework of time, such a reversal of the past is incomprehensible to us, since time appears to flow only forward.

אבל לעתיד נראה ונבין זה ההיפוך לטובה.

but in the future we will see and understand this transformation for the good.

In the ultimate future, when we transcend time, we will perceive how the past was indeed turned to good.

ולכן אמר יעקב אע"ה והי' ה' לי לאלקים פרש"י שיחול שמו עלי מתחלה ועד סוף.

Therefore Yaakov Avinu said, "And Hashem shall be to me a G-d" — Rashi explains: that His Name should rest upon me from beginning to end.

Yaakov's request was that Hashem's Name rest upon him across the entire span of his life, from beginning to end — the very span that "emes" encompasses.

כי זה הי' בחי' יעקב אמת.

For this was the aspect of "Yaakov is truth."

This all-encompassing span, beginning to end, is precisely the middah of emes that defines Yaakov.

והאמין כי יחול אלקותו עליו ויהי' למפרע הכל מתוקן וזה מפתח של גאולה מה שזוכין לעורר הארה מעין עוה"ב כי מאחר שכל ההנהגה יתברר אח"כ.

And he believed (with emunah) that His G-dliness would rest upon him, and that retroactively everything would be set right — and this is the key of redemption: that one merits to awaken an illumination resembling Olam Haba, since the entire Divine conduct will ultimately be clarified.

Yaakov's emunah that Hashem would ultimately rectify everything in retrospect is itself the "key to redemption." Holding this truth draws down a glimmer of the World to Come, where all of Hashem's hidden ways become clear.

ממילא יכולין למצוא בחי' אמת בכל מקום ובכל זמן:

Consequently, one is able to find the aspect of truth (emes) in every place and in every time.

Once a person internalizes that all times are bound together in Hashem's truth, he can discover that underlying truth even now, in any place and any moment — already tasting the redemption.

Summary: The middah of Yaakov is emes (truth), symbolized by the connecting letter vav, which binds past, present, and future into one. Because Hashem is the absolute truth, the gifts He gives Bnei Yisrael are woven into creation from beginning to end and are never accidental. Therefore, when His promises are fulfilled, it will be revealed retroactively that all the past pain was truly for the good — this is why He is the Master of consolations who transforms suffering itself into good. Yaakov's "v'hayah Hashem li l'Elokim" became the key to redemption: the emunah that everything will ultimately be set right draws down a glimmer of Olam Haba, enabling one to find the truth of Hashem in every place and every time.
