Purim's eternal transformation within time
Purim · geulah · transformation · time · Yom Kippur
It is taught that all the festivals will be nullified in the future to come, but Purim will not be nullified.
Chazal say that in the future era all the Yamim Tovim will lose their significance, yet Purim will remain — and the Sefas Emes will explain why.
For all the festivals are above time.
The regular festivals draw their kedushah from a source that transcends the natural order of time.
Therefore time itself is changed according to the fixing of the festivals.
Because the Yamim Tovim come from above time, when they are established they reshape time itself rather than being shaped by it.
For at yetzias Mitzrayim the Holy One, blessed is He, placed time into the domain of Yisrael.
At the Exodus, Hashem handed control over the calendar and the sanctification of time to Bnei Yisrael.
As it is written, "This month shall be for you" — and He took them out from the dominion of the stars and constellations, as is stated in the Zohar HaKadosh.
"HaChodesh hazeh lachem" gave Bnei Yisrael mastery over time and lifted them above the rule of the mazalos (astrological forces) that govern the natural world.
But on Purim the miracle was wrought within time itself.
Unlike the other festivals, the Purim miracle did not come from above time — it occurred within the natural flow of time, transforming it from within.
As it is written, "and the month that was turned over for them."
The verse describes how the very month that was destined for destruction was overturned into joy — the natural time itself was transformed.
And this is a foretaste of what will be in the future: "Then I will transform the nations to a pure language, that all of them call upon the name of Hashem" (Tzefaniah 3:9).
Purim's transformation of nature itself previews the future redemption, when even the nations of the world will be turned around to recognize and call upon Hashem.
And therefore "many of the people of the land became Jews."
Already at the time of the Purim miracle, this future ingathering was foreshadowed as many gentiles were drawn to convert.
And therefore they also said that Yom Kippur will not be nullified, for it too is the "turning over."
Yom Kippur, like Purim, will endure in the future, because it too embodies this principle of transformation from within.
"If your sins be like scarlet, they shall become white as snow" (Yeshayahu 1:18) — and the transgressions are turned over into merits.
On Yom Kippur, through teshuvah, even sins are not merely erased but transformed into merits — the same power of overturning that defines Purim.
And the miracle of Purim was a hint of what will be in the future.
The whole Purim story is a sign pointing toward the ultimate geulah and the transformations it will bring.
Just as the entire edifice of Haman and his faction was wholly the cause of their own downfall.
Everything Haman built up to destroy the Jews became the very means of his own destruction — evil turned into the instrument of its own undoing.
So too, in truth, all the sitra achra (the "other side," the forces of evil) that holds sway now — in the future it will become clear how all these events were causes of the salvation that will come speedily in our days.
Just as Haman's schemes brought about his fall, ultimately it will be revealed that all the present dominion of evil is in fact paving the way for the final redemption, may it come soon.
Summary: All festivals draw from above time and so reshape time, but Purim's miracle worked a transformation within time itself — overturning destruction into salvation. This makes Purim, like Yom Kippur, endure into the future, and it foreshadows the ultimate geulah, when even the forces of evil will be revealed as having served the salvation all along.
