Extended Light of the Festivals

אא"ז מו"ר ז"ל הראה רמז במשנה מחג ועד החנוכה מביא ואינו קורא ולא אמר עד כ"ה בכסליו.

“My holy grandfather and teacher, of blessed memory, showed a hint in the Mishnah: ‘From the festival until Chanukah one brings [first fruits] but does not recite,’ and it does not say ‘until the 25th of Kislev.’”

The Sefat Emet notes that the Mishnah’s wording implies an intentional extension of the festival’s influence all the way to Chanukah, without limiting it to a specific date.

לרמוז כי נמשך הארת החג עד חנוכה.

“This hints that the illumination of the festival continues until Chanukah.”

The spiritual light of Sukkot flows forward in time and culminates in Chanukah.

ולפי"ז נראה כי התחדשות השנה שבתשרי נמשך עד עתה ולכן מביא עוד ביכורים שעוד הזמן בכלל ראשית השנה.

“According to this, it seems that the renewal of the year in Tishrei extends until now, and therefore one may still bring first fruits, since this time is still included in the beginning of the year.”

The yearly renewal that begins in Tishrei is not confined to that month; its force continues until Chanukah, keeping this period within the realm of ‘first of the year.’

ולכן נקרא חנוכה שעתה נגמר החינוך והתחדשות של השנה.

“Therefore it is called Chanukah, for now the initiation and renewal of the year are completed.”

The name Chanukah reflects its role as the final stage of the year’s spiritual ‘education’ and renewal.

ואיתא בשמחת בית השואבה לא היתה חצר שאינה מאירה באור בית השואבה ע"ש אריכות הגמ' במנורות שהיו שם.

“It is taught regarding the Simchat Beit HaSho’eva that there was no courtyard in Jerusalem not illuminated by its light, as the lengthy description in the Gemara of the lamps there explains.”

The brilliance of the Sukkot festivities radiated outward so intensely that it lit the entire city, symbolizing expansive spiritual illumination.

ויתכן לרמוז שכמו שנמשך האור מרחוק בעולם.

“This may hint that just as light extends far out into the physical world…”

The physical spreading of light models the spiritual spreading of divine illumination.

כך נמשך בזמן השנה הארות החג.

“…so too the illuminations of the festival extend through the calendar year.”

The holiness of Sukkot radiates forward in time, influencing later months.

וכמו כן בנפש האדם כי עולם שנה נפש הם דוגמא אחד.

“And so it is within the human soul, for world–year–soul are one pattern.”

The same structure appears in the cosmos, in time, and within the individual; illumination spreads across all three.

וכפי רוב שמחת נפשות הצדיקים בסוכות כך נמשך האור מרחוק גם בבחי' עולם ושנה.

“And according to the great joy of the souls of the righteous on Sukkot, so too is light drawn from afar in the dimensions of world and year.”

The joy of the righteous at Sukkot generates an overflow of spiritual light that shapes both space and time.

ולכן הדור של חשמונאי התחזקו בימים האלו עוד מהארת החג דכתיב אסרו חג בעבותים הוא עבותות אהבה ותשוקה כמ"ש במ"א.

“Therefore the generation of the Hasmoneans found strength in these days from the remaining illumination of the festival, as it is written: ‘Bind the festival with cords,’ meaning cords of love and yearning, as explained elsewhere.”

The Hasmoneans were empowered by the lingering radiance of Sukkot, described metaphorically as bonds of deep love and spiritual desire.

עד קרנות המזבח רמז לחנוכה ופורים שהם ענפים שיוצאין מגוף הרגל ונקראין קרנות המזבח.

“‘Up to the horns of the altar’ hints to Chanukah and Purim, which are branches extending from the main body of the festival and are called the ‘horns of the altar.’”

Chanukah and Purim are understood as extensions of the core pilgrimage festivals, auxiliary points—‘horns’—that channel their original light.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the light of Sukkot flows through the year until Chanukah, completing the annual renewal. This spiritual illumination extends through world, year, and soul, empowering even the Hasmoneans and revealing Chanukah’s role as a continuation of the festival cycle.
