Unity Uncovering Hidden Light

Toldot · תרמ"ז (1886) · Essay 1

Concerning the wells that the Patriarchs dug.

The teaching opens by referring to the wells mentioned in the Torah, which the Patriarchs uncovered, as symbols of spiritual discovery.

As it is written: “Let the waters be gathered to one place, and let the dry land appear.”

This verse from Creation is cited as a key to understanding the hidden and revealed aspects of divine reality.

For above, the light is revealed; below, it is concealed.

The heavenly realms are open to divine illumination, while the earthly realms hide that same light beneath layers of concealment.

And when one attains unity, one can find the hidden light.

Through unifying all aspects of being with the Divine, the concealed illumination becomes accessible.

And the waters allude to the Torah, which is called “water.”

Just as water gives life and flows to all places, so the Torah nourishes and sustains the soul.

And as it is in the world, so it is in the year and in the soul.

The same pattern of hidden and revealed light exists in space, in time, and within the human being.

And the human being includes all things, being called a “small world.”

Humanity mirrors the entire creation; all cosmic forces are reflected within the person.

And just as in the physical body, in the head and the brain the light is concealed, and through the gathering of all the limbs the spring is awakened to bring forth offspring.

Within the human form, the hidden vitality is drawn forth when all parts act together in harmony, producing new life and insight.

For the human being includes heaven and earth, and there is like a firmament separating the upper part, the head, from the lower part, as is known.

The person is a microcosm of creation, with a spiritual “firmament” dividing higher consciousness from the bodily realm.

So too in the world there are places such as the Land of Israel and the Holy Temple, where the Patriarchs found the root of the spring.

Just as within the person there are points of awakening, so in the world there are sacred sites where divine flow emerges.

And likewise in time, on the holy Sabbath, when all becomes united in the mystery of Oneness, the well is opened.

The Sabbath is the temporal counterpart to those sacred places, a time when the hidden source of blessing is revealed.

And each of the Patriarchs dug by means of the attribute unique to him.

Each Patriarch accessed the divine spring through his own spiritual quality—Abraham through love, Isaac through awe, Jacob through truth.

For every attribute is a vessel.

Each trait serves as a channel through which divine light can be received and expressed.

When one becomes completely selfless within that attribute for the sake of Heaven, one can find the spring through that very attribute.

True spiritual discovery comes when a person nullifies ego and dedicates their qualities wholly to divine service.

For “let the dry land appear” is only a covering, so that the waters not be revealed.

The physical world conceals the spiritual flow; the “dry land” is a veil over the living waters beneath.

And through effort one can find the waters beneath the dry land.

Through spiritual labor and perseverance, the hidden Torah and divine vitality are uncovered from beneath the surface of material existence.

Summary: The wells of the Patriarchs symbolize the uncovering of hidden divine light within creation, time, and the soul. By uniting all aspects of being and dedicating each personal quality to Heaven, one reveals the concealed waters of Torah and life that flow beneath the surface of the world.
