Radiating holy light through space, time, and soul
olam shanah nefesh · Menorah · moadim · bittul · hidden light
The passage of the lamps (of the Menorah) follows after the festivals.
The Sefas Emes notes the Torah's ordering: the parsha of kindling the Menorah's lamps comes right after the section of the moadim (festivals), and he asks what this teaches.
This hints that just as the Bais Hamikdash was a designated place from which light went out to the whole world — and this is the mitzvah of the lamps of the Menorah —
The Bais Hamikdash served as the fixed point in space from which spiritual light radiated to all the world, and the Menorah's lamps embodied that flow of light.
So too within the year, light goes forth from the festivals to the entire year.
The moadim are the fixed points in time from which light spreads to every day of the year, paralleling the Menorah in space.
As is written in the Zohar HaKadosh, that they are called Yamim Tovim (good days) on account of the revelation of the hidden light on Shabbosos and Yamim Tovim.
The Zohar explains that these days are "good" because the or haganuz (the primordial hidden light) becomes revealed on Shabbos and the festivals.
For the dimensions of olam, shanah, nefesh (world, year, soul — space, time, and self) operate in a single manner.
The three axes of creation — space, time, and the human soul — share one underlying pattern, so what is true of one holds in the others.
Therefore, so too in the dimension of nefesh (soul).
The same structure of a radiating central point applies to the realm of the soul, that is, to people.
From Bnei Yisrael, light goes forth to all created beings.
In the dimension of souls, Bnei Yisrael are the central point from which spiritual light flows to all of creation.
And this is the connection: the choosing of the Kohanim, the servants of Hashem, in the dimension of soul; the Shabbosos and festivals in the dimension of time;
Parshas Emor weaves together all three axes — the Kohanim chosen among souls, the holy days chosen within time, and (next) the Mikdash chosen within space.
And the avodah of the Mikdash in the dimension of world (space).
The Temple service is the chosen central point in the spatial world, completing the trio of space, time, and soul.
And all must nullify themselves to the root; and Bnei Yisrael themselves must be subordinate to the Kohanim and the servants of Hashem, as it is written, "And you shall sanctify him" (Vayikra 21:8).
Everything attains its light by bittul (self-nullification) to its source: in the realm of souls, the people sanctify and defer to the Kohanim, who are the channel closest to the root.
And likewise one must nullify all the times to the Shabbosos and Yamim Tovim.
In the realm of time, the ordinary weekdays are subordinated to and draw their meaning from Shabbos and the festivals.
Therefore one must remember the Shabbos during the workdays.
This is why we are commanded to count the weekdays toward Shabbos and keep it in mind — the workweek is nullified to and oriented around Shabbos.
And likewise to nullify all the places to the Bais Hamikdash, as Chazal said that it is called "Talpiyos," for all turn toward it.
In the realm of space, all places are subordinated to the Mikdash, which Chazal call Talpiyos — the hill (tel) toward which all mouths (piyos) turn in prayer.
And in this way the light is revealed and spreads through all the world, all the times, and all the souls, as above.
When each domain nullifies itself to its central holy point, the hidden light is released and radiates outward through all of space, time, and souls.
Summary: The Sefas Emes explains why the Menorah follows the festivals: just as the Bais Hamikdash is the radiating point of holy light in space and the moadim are that point in time, so Bnei Yisrael and the Kohanim are that point in the realm of souls. Across all three axes — olam, shanah, nefesh — the light spreads only when everything nullifies itself to its holy root.
