Concerning the shekalim: "twenty gerah is the shekel…" (Shemos 30:13).

The Sefas Emes opens his discussion of the half-shekel and the meaning of its measure of twenty gerah.

For it is written, "How beautiful are your footsteps… O daughter of the noble one" (Shir HaShirim 7:2) — the daughter of Avraham Avinu, who is called "the noble one" (nadiv).

Chazal identify the "noble one" as Avraham; Bnei Yisrael are his children, heirs to his trait of nedivus (generous giving).

For this generosity in Yisrael is rooted from the Avos, and therefore it is in a measured limit: "the poor shall not give less and the rich shall not give more" (Shemos 30:15).

Because this giving flows from an inherited inner point rather than personal wealth, all give the same fixed half-shekel — rich and poor alike.

For the main thing is for each person to find the point implanted within him by the power of the Avos.

Every Jew carries an inner nekudah (point) of holiness planted by the Avos; the avodah is to uncover it.

But to each one a concealment was given.

This inner point is hidden, and each person faces his own particular concealment over it.

And there is one who, through much wisdom, attains the point.

Some reach their inner point by means of great wisdom and effort in Torah.

And there is one who attains it through few deeds.

Others reach it through simpler means, with fewer outward accomplishments.

Therefore the reward of each is not the same.

Since people differ in their paths and efforts, their rewards differ accordingly.

But the goal is to find one's own point.

Despite the differences, the single shared purpose is for each to reach his own inner nekudah.

Therefore in the penimiyus (inner dimension) of each one, the hand of all is equal.

At the level of the inner point, all Jews are truly equal — which is why all give the identical half-shekel.

And I heard from my grandfather, my teacher and master, of blessed memory, that "gerah" is a term of drawing-toward (hamshachah).

The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim): the word "gerah" connotes being drawn after something.

Therefore a "maah" (coin) is called a "gerah."

A coin is named "gerah" because of how it draws a person toward it.

For it is precious money after which a person is drawn — and these are the words of his holy mouth.

Money exerts a powerful pull on people; the term "gerah" captures that magnetic drawing-after. (The Sefas Emes marks the saying as his grandfather's holy words.)

And it appears that ten gerah is the bittul of the ten middos, for this power was drawn down to Bnei Yisrael from the ten tests with which Avraham Avinu was tested, in which was included the bittul of all ten middos, and from all of them an illumination remained for Klal Yisrael.

Ten gerah corresponds to nullifying the ten inner faculties; Avraham's ten nisyonos accomplished a total bittul of these middos, leaving a permanent spiritual light for all his descendants.

And it appears that twenty gerah is: to draw oneself away from this world in all aspects of the ten middos.

The first ten gerah represent withdrawing one's ten faculties from the pull of olam hazeh.

And ten to be drawn after the ten spiritual middos.

The second ten represent then being drawn toward the corresponding ten spiritual middos — turning away from below in order to attach above.

Therefore what is asked of a person is a half-shekel — which is the departure from physicality.

A person is only required to give the "half" — the first ten gerah, his own effort to detach from the material world.

And the ten higher ones come automatically with siyata diShmaya (heavenly assistance).

Once a person does his part of withdrawing from gashmiyus, the upper ten — the spiritual elevation — are granted to him from Heaven.

And the verse made the pilgrimage festivals (aliyos regalim) dependent on this generosity, for by this power they merited to see the face of Hashem.

The Torah links the shekel-giving to the festival pilgrimages, because the self-detachment of giving is what enables one to "see the face of Hashem."

Therefore it is called "lifting of the head" (nesias rosh) and "to atone for your souls" (Shemos 30:15).

The act of giving elevates the person ("lifting the head") and atones, because it lifts him out of the physical toward the spiritual.

For at the time of Mattan Torah, before the sin, all of Bnei Yisrael were "people of ascent" (bnei aliyah).

At Sinai, prior to the chet ha'eigel, every Jew was on an exalted spiritual level, able to ascend continually.

As it is written, "I said you are angelic beings (elohim)" (Tehillim 82:6).

At that moment they were like heavenly beings, beyond ordinary physical limitation.

And they were prepared to ascend continually to Hashem.

In that pristine state they could always rise upward to Hashem without hindrance.

As it was with Moshe Rabbeinu and with Eliyahu, who were able to "shed their form" to ascend to the mountain and then return and reclothe themselves in this world.

Moshe and Eliyahu could detach from physicality to ascend and then return to bodily life — the model of the elevated state Bnei Yisrael had at Sinai.

As it is said, there was freedom from death.

Chazal teach that at Sinai Bnei Yisrael attained freedom from death — the result of being so detached from physical limitation.

And after the sin, HaKadosh Baruch Hu gave us the counsel to draw near to Him by means of the Bais Hamikdash and the korbanos.

After the sin lowered them, Hashem provided the Mikdash and its offerings as the means to regain closeness to Him.

And this "seeing" was fulfilled three times a year.

The "seeing of Hashem's face" was now realized through the three annual pilgrimage festivals.

Therefore they would set aside the chamber-funds three times: before Pesach, Shavuos (Atzeres), and Sukkos (HeChag).

The terumas halishkah was drawn three times yearly, aligned with the three festivals of ascent.

For through this generosity they merited to see the face of Hashem, as above.

The giving of the shekalim is what enabled the festival "seeing of Hashem's face."

Therefore the first of Nissan is the New Year for the festivals, on which is also the New Year for the shekel-contributions.

Because the shekel-giving and the festival pilgrimages are inwardly one, the first of Nissan serves as the Rosh Hashanah for both.

Summary: The twenty gerah of the shekel represent ten gerah of withdrawing one's ten faculties from this world and ten of attaching to the corresponding spiritual middos — a power inherited from Avraham's ten nisyonos. A person need give only the "half" (detaching from physicality); the spiritual ascent comes as siyata diShmaya. This self-elevation, recovered after the sin through the Mikdash and the festival pilgrimages, is why the shekel-giving aligns with the New Year for the regalim on the first of Nissan.
