Hidden light revealed through Purim's distress
Purim · hester panim · Amalek · Megillah · salvation
"And these days are remembered and done."
The Megillah teaches that the days of Purim are not merely recalled — through remembering them they are actively renewed each year.
According to the remembering, in that Bnei Yisrael recall the miracles through the reading of the Megillah.
The very act of Bnei Yisrael recalling the nissim (miracles) during the krias haMegillah is what draws the miracle down anew.
So too are they done.
"Done" means re-enacted — the light of the original miracle is made fresh in the present.
And the illumination of the miracles is renewed in every generation.
The haaras hanissim (light of the miracles) is not a one-time event but a recurring shefa (flow) renewed for each dor.
For the hatred of Amalek and Haman operates in the dimensions of olam (space), shanah (time), and nefesh (soul).
Drawing on the Sefer Yetzirah's three axes — world, year, and soul — the Sefas Emes says Amalek's enmity attacks a Jew on all three planes.
And likewise the miracle came about in these same three aspects.
Since the threat spanned all three dimensions, the salvation too had to reach into world, year, and soul.
"In every generation" corresponds to the aspect of shanah (time/year).
The phrase "in every generation" maps onto the axis of time.
"Every family" corresponds to the aspect of nefashos (souls).
The Megillah's words "family and family" represent the dimension of individual souls.
"Province and city" corresponds to the aspect of olam (world/space).
The geographic terms in the Megillah represent the spatial dimension of creation.
And the war against Amalek is fought across all three of these aspects.
The battle with Amalek is total, engaging every plane of a person's existence.
And the salvation that came in the days of Mordechai and Esther was a preparation for all the days of galus.
The Purim yeshuah (salvation) seeded a power of redemption that sustains Bnei Yisrael throughout the long exile.
And in the Midrash they expounded regarding Mordechai the verse "one who does righteousness at all times" (Tehillim 106:3) — see there.
Chazal apply the verse about constant tzedakah to Mordechai, hinting that his light is accessible "at all times," even in concealment.
And it is brought in the name of the Rokeach: "a time of distress... it is for Yaakov, and from it (mi-mennah) he shall be saved" (Yirmiyahu 30:7).
The Rokeach reads the word "mimennah" — and from it — to teach that the very distress (and the name "Haman" hidden in the letters) becomes the source of rescue.
"From Haman" he shall be saved.
The letters of "mimennah" spell "miHaman" — the salvation emerges from within the very oppressor himself.
For there is a salvation that comes from within the distress itself, as the Sages taught that "in distress" (ba-tzar) is one of the ten expressions of tefillah.
Crying out from the narrow place is itself a form of prayer; the constriction becomes the very channel of deliverance.
As it is written: "a help in troubles, readily found" (Tehillim 46:2).
Hashem's help is "found" precisely within the troubles, not only after them.
And Chazal said: Where is Esther hinted in the Torah? "And I will surely hide (haster astir) My face" (Devarim 31:18).
The name Esther echoes hester — concealment. The whole Purim story unfolds under the hiddenness of Hashem's face.
"Anochi" (I) refers to the Torah.
The "I" in "I will surely hide" is the Torah itself, the Anochi of the Aseres Hadibros.
"I am Hashem your God" (Shemos 20:2).
The same "Anochi" that opens the Ten Commandments is the Torah that can govern even in hidden ways.
And sometimes the conduct of the Torah operates by way of concealment.
The Torah's guidance does not always shine openly; at times it works through a veil of hester panim.
When [the people] are not fit for [the Torah] to be in open revelation.
When a generation lacks the merit for open light, the Torah still operates, but in a concealed mode.
As the verse concludes: "because of all the evil..." (Devarim 31:18).
The hester panim comes "because of all the evil they have done" — the concealment is a response to the people's state.
Therefore the illumination of the Torah comes by way of the hiding of the face.
Paradoxically, in such times the light of Torah reaches the people specifically through the concealment.
This is the meaning of "The Jews had light (orah)" — this refers to Torah (Megillah 16b).
Chazal identify the "light" the Jews received on Purim as the light of Torah.
"Hayesah" (it was/became) is an expression like "I was made ill and weakened" (nih'yeisi) (cf. Daniel 8:27).
The word "hayesah" carries a sense of being brought low; the light came to them out of a state of being crushed and broken.
That the light of the Torah came to them from within the distress and the hiding of the face.
Their illumination was born precisely out of the suffering and concealment — the darkness itself became the womb of light.
And it is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh that "Purim" is named after "Yom HaKippurim" (a day like Purim), which is destined to be transformed from affliction (innui) to delight (oneg).
Yom Kippur and Purim are an inner pair; in the future the day of affliction will turn entirely into delight, just as Purim is a day of joy.
For on Yom Kippur the Kohen Gadol enters the innermost sanctum, and regarding this it is written "let him not come at all times" (Vayikra 16:2), but only on a designated day, and through the fasting of all Bnei Yisrael — "you shall afflict your souls" (Vayikra 16:31).
On Yom Kippur the hidden light is accessible only at one designated moment, to one person, and only through national affliction — a tightly restricted approach to the innermost holiness.
But on the days of Purim it is written: "I will come to the king... not according to the law (lo ka-das)" (Esther 4:16).
Esther entered the king's inner chamber "against the rules," hinting that on Purim the innermost light may be approached even where it is normally forbidden.
Into a place where one is not permitted to enter at all times.
Just as the inner sanctum is normally off-limits, so too the innermost divine light is normally inaccessible.
But on Purim permission is granted for the hidden light to be revealed at all times.
Purim uniquely opens the gate so that the concealed inner light — normally reserved for one moment — becomes available continually.
As stated in the aforementioned Midrash on Mordechai, "one who does righteousness at all times."
This is why Mordechai is the man of "all times" — through him the hidden light becomes constantly accessible.
And in truth this salvation came about through the blotting out of Amalek, for there is joy before Him on high when there is a downfall of Amalek and Haman.
The deliverance is bound up with the erasure of Amalek; the fall of the force of evil brings rejoicing in the upper worlds.
And the gates of salvation were opened.
With Amalek's defeat the channels of yeshuah are flung open for Bnei Yisrael.
Summary: On Purim the miracle is renewed each year through our remembering it. Amalek attacks across world, time, and soul, but the Purim salvation — hinted in the name Esther (concealment) — shows that Hashem's deepest light emerges specifically from within distress and hiddenness. Unlike Yom Kippur's single restricted moment of access to the inner sanctum, Purim opens the hidden light "at all times," and the blotting out of Amalek flings wide the gates of salvation.
