Shabbos as the tikkun of Amalek
Chazal established the reading of Parshas Zachor on Shabbos Kodesh, for just as Chazal said: had Bnei Yisrael kept the very first Shabbos, no nation or tongue would have ruled over them, as it is written "they went out…" and then "Amalek came…"
The Sefas Emes notes that Chazal tied the very first failure to guard Shabbos to the attack of Amalek that immediately followed, and that this is why the mitzvah of Zachor is read specifically on Shabbos.
Just so, certainly the tikkun (rectification) will come about through shemiras Shabbos (guarding the Shabbos).
If the breach came through neglect of Shabbos, then the repair of Amalek's damage must come through proper observance of Shabbos.
For Shabbos is called "peace," the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He.
Shabbos embodies shalom and is itself a Name of Hashem, expressing wholeness and completeness.
And He has already sworn that His Name is not complete until the offspring of Amalek is erased.
Chazal teach that Hashem's Name and Throne remain incomplete so long as Amalek endures.
And this is the exact opposite of Bnei Yisrael, regarding whom Hashem swore to our Avos to make them His treasured people, and His great Name is called upon us, as it is written "and our name You called by Your Name" — and when Bnei Yisrael are rectified as they ought to be, then His Name will be complete.
Bnei Yisrael are the bearers of Hashem's Name; their perfection brings His Name to completeness, which is the polar opposite of Amalek, whose existence keeps that Name incomplete.
And correspondingly, on the other side, when the name of Amalek is erased, it will be a day that is entirely Shabbos.
The blotting out of Amalek and the arrival of the eternal Shabbos of the future are one and the same event.
Now Bnei Yisrael are called "reishis" (first) and also "acharis" (last).
Yisrael are both the beginning and the end — they endure from start to finish.
But concerning Amalek it is written: "Amalek is the first of nations, but his end is utter destruction" (Bamidbar 24:20).
Amalek may have a "first," but he has no enduring "last"; his end is total ruin.
For the resha'im (wicked) begin in unity and end in fragmentation.
Evil may appear cohesive at its start, but it inevitably disintegrates into disunity and collapse.
But Bnei Yisrael, though they are now "scattered and dispersed," will in the end arrive at the true unity.
Yisrael's present fragmentation in galus is only temporary; their destiny is genuine, lasting achdus (unity).
And had Bnei Yisrael rectified the first Shabbos, the "first" of Amalek would not have existed at all.
Proper observance of that first Shabbos would have denied Amalek even his beginning, his foothold of power.
And now the tikkun must come about through the final Shabbos, the day that is entirely Shabbos.
Since the first Shabbos was not guarded, the repair is deferred to the ultimate Shabbos of the future world.
For Shabbos alludes both to the Shabbos of Creation and to the Shabbos of the future.
Every Shabbos points backward to the first Shabbos of Bereishis and forward to the eternal Shabbos of the geulah.
And since Nissan is the time of geulah (redemption) —
Nissan is designated as the month of redemption.
— it follows that the month of Adar is designated for the downfall of the wicked Amalek, may his name and memory be blotted out.
Adar, leading into the redemption of Nissan, is the fitting time for Amalek's defeat — as occurred in the Purim miracle.
So that afterward His Name, may He be blessed, will be complete.
The fall of Amalek in Adar clears the way for the completion of Hashem's Name in the redemption that follows.
And Nissan is the first month, while Adar is the last month.
In the order of the months, Nissan stands at the head and Adar at the very end of the year.
And in the "end" Amalek has nothing.
Since Amalek has no enduring acharis, the final month is precisely where he has no grip.
As it is written: "his end is utter destruction."
The pasuk confirms that Amalek's terminus is annihilation.
Therefore in Adar he is primed for downfall.
The last month is the natural moment for the collapse of one who has no "last."
And certainly Chazal foresaw that in the future Bnei Yisrael will keep Shabbos in its proper form in the month of Adar.
Chazal's establishment of Zachor on Shabbos in Adar reflects their vision that the final repair of Shabbos will take place then.
And then, "when He grants you rest… you shall blot out the memory of Amalek" (Devarim 25:19).
With Shabbos properly guarded, the rest (menuchah) of the final Shabbos arrives and the memory of Amalek is erased.
And His Name, may He be blessed, will be complete, and His Throne complete, speedily in our days.
The blotting out of Amalek brings the longed-for completion of Hashem's Name and Throne in the full geulah.
Summary: Because the first failure to guard Shabbos opened the door to Amalek, the tikkun must likewise come through Shabbos, which is itself shalom and a Name of Hashem. Yisrael are both "first" and "last" and will reach true unity, while Amalek, who has only a "first" and no enduring "last," is destined for destruction. Adar — the final month, leading into the redemption of Nissan — is therefore the time of Amalek's downfall, and the future "day that is entirely Shabbos" will at last blot out his memory and bring Hashem's Name and Throne to completeness.
