Circumcision Revealing the Divine Image
In the verse, “A ladder was set upon the earth, and its head reached the heavens … angels were ascending …,” and in the Gemara: “They ascend and gaze upon his likeness, they descend and gaze ….”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing the dream of the ladder and the teaching that angels ascend and descend while gazing at Jacob’s spiritual form.
It seems to be a hint to the form of the human being, who was created in the image of God.
The ladder vision is understood as a symbolic revelation of the deeper divine image within a person.
And it is written, “Who will ascend for us to the heavens?”—that through circumcision, which removes the foreskin that covers the inner form,
The verse is interpreted spiritually: removing what conceals allows the inner divine image to emerge.
and one who merits to guard his covenant has the higher form revealed within him, and the form below becomes aligned with the form above.
Faithfulness to the covenant allows bodily life to mirror its heavenly root.
And through this, the angels of God ascend and descend.
Spiritual harmony within a person creates pathways for angelic ascent and descent.
For from every mitzvah an angel is created.
Every good deed generates spiritual forces that rise upward.
And when a person rectifies his 248 limbs properly, then they truly ascend and descend within him.
The human being becomes the ladder itself when fully refined.
And Jacob, peace be upon him, who is the choicest of humankind, created in the image of God,
Jacob embodies the highest realization of the divine image.
this vision was shown to him, and afterward “God stood over him ….”
The ladder vision prepares Jacob to perceive God’s presence directly.
“The land upon which you are lying …,” as it is written, “I made the earth, and upon it I created man.”
The verse about the land is linked to humanity’s divinely intended place within creation.
For the human being was created to rule over the earth, as it says, “You placed all beneath his feet.”
The human role is stewardship, grounded in spiritual alignment.
And in the Zohar it is stated: “He gives a soul to the people upon it,” meaning that one who rises above nature merits a soul.
Transcending mere physical existence brings access to higher spiritual vitality.
And this is the meaning of “The land upon which you lie, I will give to you,” and our sages said that the Holy One folded all of the Land of Israel beneath him.
This act signifies Jacob’s elevated spiritual state, aligning with the whole land.
And this was because he rose above nature, and he connects and lifts all of creation to its root, and thus becomes sovereign over the entire land.
Mastery arises not from force but from spiritual elevation that uplifts the world.
All this occurs when one merits the inner form, which is above the physical form below.
The inner spiritual image transcends and guides the material form.
And our sages said: One who delights in Shabbat merits a boundless inheritance … the inheritance of Jacob your father, “and you shall burst forth westward ….”
Shabbat opens access to Jacob’s expansive spiritual legacy.
Meaning, as above, that Shabbat is the nullification of nature and of mundane actions.
Shabbat suspends ordinary limits and reveals deeper being.
Therefore one merits on it an additional soul and the inner image, and is called “a person upon it ….”
On Shabbat a person’s true spiritual form shines more clearly.
And the verse “the land upon which you lie …” is fulfilled in him.
Shabbat elevates the person to Jacob’s level of harmony with creation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet interprets Jacob’s ladder as a revelation of the divine image within the human being. When a person uncovers the inner form and lives in spiritual integrity, angels ascend from his deeds, nature is transcended, and he becomes aligned with Jacob’s expansive inheritance. Shabbat especially reveals this higher image and grants the soul’s elevation.
