Yosef: removal and addition, Zachor and Shamor
Yosef · Shabbos · bris milah · Zachor and Shamor · remembrance
On the pasuk, "When Rachel bore Yosef…" (Bereishis 30:25) — Rashi explains: "because the house of Yosef is a flame…" (that would consume the house of Esav).
Only once Yosef was born did Yaakov feel ready to leave Lavan, because Yosef is the "flame" destined to subdue Esav, the adversary.
I have already written elsewhere that Yosef is named for two aspects: "He has gathered (asaf) my disgrace," and "May Hashem add (yosef) to me another son" (Bereishis 30:23-24).
The name Yosef carries a double meaning — removal of disgrace (asaf) and addition of more (yosef) — and these two motions, taking away and adding on, are the key to the whole piece.
Likewise Shabbos is named both for "shevisah" (rest/cessation) and for "hashbasah" — that all the sitra achra (the other side) is removed and passes away.
Shabbos too has these two dimensions: it is rest, and it is the active nullification of impurity, which is banished on the holy day.
And likewise in the os bris (sign of the covenant, the milah) there is both the removal of the orlah (foreskin) and the revelation of "light is sown for the tzaddik" (Tehillim 97:11).
Bris milah follows the same pattern: cutting away the orlah (removal) and thereby uncovering the holy light hidden within (addition/revelation).
Therefore Yosef had two shevatim (tribes).
Because Yosef embodies these two motions, he uniquely gave rise to two tribes rather than one.
Menasheh — named for "ki nashani" ("for Hashem has made me forget" all my toil — Bereishis 41:51).
Menasheh represents the dimension of removal: the forgetting and clearing away of past hardship.
And Ephraim — named for the addition ("for Hashem has made me fruitful" — Bereishis 41:52).
Ephraim represents the dimension of addition: increase, fruitfulness, growth.
And these are the aspects of "Zachor" (Remember) and "Shamor" (Guard).
The two motions map onto the twin commands of Shabbos: Shamor (guarding, holding back from melachah — removal) and Zachor (remembering, the positive — addition).
Now Rivkah said, "until your brother's anger turns away and he forgets what you did to him; then I will send and take you from there" (Bereishis 27:45).
Rivkah told Yaakov he could return only once Esav would forget his grievance — the moment of forgetting was the condition for Yaakov's homecoming.
And when Yosef was born — the aspect of remembrance (zikaron) — it came about.
Yosef embodies zikaron, the power of holy remembering that gathers up and elevates.
It follows automatically that "when this one rises, that one falls" (Bereishis Rabbah on Yaakov and Esav).
The two powers are inversely linked: as the holy remembrance of Yosef rose, Esav's strength had to fall.
So the "forgetting" fell to the side of Esav, and therefore Yaakov said, "Send me away…" (Bereishis 30:25).
Once Yosef's power of remembrance arose, forgetting passed over to Esav — fulfilling Rivkah's condition — and so Yaakov knew the time had come to ask Lavan to let him return home.
Summary: The name Yosef holds two motions — removing disgrace (asaf) and adding blessing (yosef) — the same dual pattern found in Shabbos (shevisah and hashbasah) and in bris milah (cutting the orlah and revealing holy light), corresponding to Zachor and Shamor. This is why Yosef gave rise to two tribes, Menasheh (forgetting/removal) and Ephraim (increase/addition). With Yosef's birth, the power of holy remembrance rose in Yaakov while forgetting fell to Esav — fulfilling Rivkah's condition for return — and so Yaakov asked Lavan to send him home.
