Divine Harmony of Opposing Traits

Vayigash · תרמ"ה (1884) · Essay 1

Joseph · Judah · Fire and Water · Middot · Spiritual Balance

Concerning the dispute of the tribes with Joseph, the Mishnah was fulfilled in them: a dispute for the sake of Heaven will ultimately endure.

The Sefat Emet explains that the tension among the tribes was not petty conflict but a spiritually rooted disagreement that, being for the sake of Heaven, possessed enduring value.

For certainly the dispute followed unique paths that each of them had in serving the Blessed Creator.

Each tribe embodied a distinct spiritual path, and their disagreement arose from genuinely different modes of divine service.

For Jacob, peace be upon him, is the essence of the Torah.

Jacob represents the unified core of Torah from which all interpretations and paths emanate.

And his expansion was through the thirteen principles by which the Torah is expounded.

The diversity of Jacob’s descendants reflects the multifaceted interpretive methods embedded within Torah itself.

Therefore, each one had a unique path.

Each tribe developed its own valid and necessary spiritual approach.

And we find that the Torah is called fire, as it is written: “Is not My word like fire?”

The Torah possesses an aspect of fiery intensity and passion.

And we find that it is called water, as it is written: “All who are thirsty, go to the water.”

The Torah also has an aspect of cooling, soothing, and sustaining water.

And Joseph the righteous was in the aspect of fire, as it is written: “The house of Joseph is a flame,” meaning spiritual enthusiasm, as in “his heart was lifted in the ways of God.”

Joseph embodies fiery zeal, elevated spirit, and passionate service.

And Judah is the aspect of water, which is humility and prayer, “to pour out one’s heart like water,” as the Gemara says: water descends to low places.

Judah represents surrender, lowliness, and heartfelt prayer.

And in truth, within all Israel there must be all these forces.

The nation requires the full spectrum of spiritual qualities.

And completeness comes through all the traits, for the Holy One created man to contain diverse traits.

Human perfection arises only through the harmonious integration of different character qualities.

Surely they are all equally good.

No trait is intrinsically superior; each contributes to wholeness.

And one must conduct oneself with joy, with humility, and with strength—sometimes with one, sometimes with another—until arriving at true completeness.

A person cycles among various modes of service, each necessary at its time.

And in an individual person it is also so.

The same dynamics that operate in the nation operate within each soul.

If the conflict in his heart, the division of his traits, is for the sake of Heaven...

Inner tensions, when directed toward divine service, are constructive.

Then the repair comes through the joining of all the traits, and they ultimately endure.

Integration follows sanctified struggle.

And we also find regarding angels: “He makes peace in His heights,” Michael, prince of water, and Gabriel, of fire, and the Holy One makes peace between them.

Even celestial forces represent opposing qualities harmonized by God.

So too were the tribes below.

Their differences mirror heavenly archetypes.

And I again found in the Midrash Tanchuma on this portion: Joseph is the ox and Judah is the lion, etc.

This imagery reflects their distinct spiritual strengths.

And this is as above: the lion is to the right and the ox to the left—an aspect of the powers called fire.

The symbols confirm the fiery and watery dynamics previously explained.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the tribes’ dispute reflects diverse, valid spiritual paths—fire and water, zeal and humility—and that true wholeness emerges only when all traits harmonize, both in the nation and within each individual.
