The addition of Shemini Atzeres

In the Midrash on the verse "And I will add to all your praise" (Tehillim 71:14).

The Sefas Emes brings a Midrash built on the word "add," which he will connect to the "added" festival day of Shemini Atzeres.

For Shemini Atzeres is an addition onto the days of the festival, and the Holy One's addition is greater than the essential portion itself.

Shemini Atzeres is an "extra" day appended to Sukkos; yet what Hashem adds outweighs the original — the tosefes (addition) carries more than the main festival.

The matter is this: in this is recognized the greatness of Bnei Yisrael, that they add from the profane onto the holy.

The unique virtue of Bnei Yisrael is that they extend kedushah outward — adding from the weekday into the holy, as in tosefes Shabbos — bringing more under Hashem's domain than was strictly given.

And for this they merit a corresponding supernal addition from above.

Because they add below, they are granted an answering "addition" from Above — extra divine bounty drawn down in response to their effort.

For the depth of the heights depends on the depth below, as is explained elsewhere on this.

The highest spiritual reach is unlocked precisely through effort at the lowest level — the loftier ascent above is "suspended" upon how far down a person is willing to begin.

Therefore, even though during the days of Sukkos the seventy nations have a grasp,

During Sukkos, when seventy bulls are offered, the seventy nations still have a "hold," a share in the bounty that descends.

nevertheless, through the "addition" present in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael — a yearning to cleave to the Source, as stated above —

What sets Bnei Yisrael apart is the extra longing in their hearts to attach themselves to the root, to the inner Source rather than the outer bounty.

Shemini Atzeres is added to them, and in this "addition" there is no foreign contact at all.

That inner yearning earns them Shemini Atzeres — a day that is entirely "yours," in which the nations have no grasp whatsoever; the tosefes belongs to Bnei Yisrael alone.

And examine all of this carefully.

The Sefas Emes closes with the customary call to study and refine the idea further.

Summary: Shemini Atzeres is the "addition" beyond Sukkos, mirroring the unique avodah of Bnei Yisrael who add from the profane to the holy. Because they yearn to cleave to the inner Source rather than the outer bounty the nations grasp, they merit a supernal addition — a day belonging to them alone, untouched by any foreign hold.
