Second Luchos: Torah's wisdom clothed in the world

It is written: "Wisdom is good with an inheritance" (Koheles 7:11).

Chochmah is best when joined to a "nachalah" — when wisdom is paired with something concrete and enduring in which to be invested.

And in the Midrash, like that which we learned: "Talmud Torah is beautiful together with derech eretz (worldly occupation)" (Avos 2:2).

The Midrash links the pasuk to the mishnah: Torah is most beautiful when it is joined to and lived out through the practical, everyday world.

For behold, at the time of Mattan Torah it was openly, in the aspect of the "ispaklaria ha'me'irah" (the clear, luminous lens), which is the aspect of "those who see the sun."

At Sinai the Torah was revealed in full, public clarity — like seeing through a perfectly clear glass, or gazing directly at the sun. This was an unmediated, radiant revelation.

But after the sin (of the Golden Calf), the second Luchos came in the aspect of "wisdom with an inheritance."

After the cheit ha'eigel, the second Tablets came on a different footing — Torah no longer in blinding open revelation, but "wisdom with an inheritance," wisdom clothed within the ordinary world.

And this is the radiance of the Torah as it is clothed within the physical mitzvos that are before us.

The second Luchos represent Torah's light as it invests itself in tangible, this-worldly mitzvos — the Torah we actually live through physical deeds.

And about this they said (Rashi, Bereishis 1:1): why did the Torah begin with "Bereishis"? Because of "the power of His deeds He told [to His people]" (Tehillim 111:6) — for this aspect is called "the power of His deeds."

The Torah opens with the account of creation because "the power of His deeds" — Hashem's work embedded in the natural world — is itself this lower aspect of Torah, the wisdom clothed within physical reality.

For in truth even the work of creation and nature are all Torah, as it is written: "You made them all with wisdom" (Tehillim 104:24).

Nature is not separate from Torah; the same divine chochmah that is the Torah is woven into all of creation, so the natural world is itself a garment of Torah.

And at first Bnei Yisrael needed to rise entirely above nature.

Before they could receive Torah clothed in the natural world, Yisrael first had to ascend completely beyond nature — the lofty, supernatural level of the first Luchos.

And afterward they were able to arrive at the aspect of "wisdom with an inheritance."

Only after first transcending nature could they descend to draw the Torah's light down into the physical world — "wisdom with an inheritance."

And from one perspective this is an advantage over the first level, as is found in the Midrashim that the second Luchos contain halachos, aggados, etc., see there.

In one respect this lower level surpasses the first: the second Tablets were richer, containing the full breadth of halachah and aggadah — the Torah's wisdom developed and applied within the world.

And this is the meaning of "Wisdom is good with an inheritance, and more so for those who see the sun" (Koheles 7:11) — for because they were first in the aspect of "those who see the sun," they afterward came to this advantage.

The pasuk's "and more so for those who see the sun" teaches that the advantage of "wisdom with an inheritance" was attainable precisely because they had first reached the higher, sun-gazing clarity of the first Luchos; the lower level is enriched by having passed through the higher one.

Therefore there is Chag HaShavuos.

Shavuos corresponds to the higher aspect — the original, luminous revelation of the first Luchos.

And there is Shemini Atzeres.

Shemini Atzeres, by contrast, corresponds to the second aspect — the Torah drawn down into the world.

And Simchas Torah is in this month (Tishrei), which is the aspect of "wisdom with an inheritance," as above.

The rejoicing of Simchas Torah in Tishrei celebrates this second level — Torah's light invested in the practical mitzvos of the world, the joy of "wisdom with an inheritance."

Summary: The first Luchos were a blinding, open revelation ("seeing the sun"), while the second Luchos — given after the cheit ha'eigel — are "wisdom with an inheritance," Torah clothed within nature and physical mitzvos and enriched with all of halachah and aggadah. This lower level is in fact an advantage, reached only by having first transcended nature; Shavuos reflects the higher revelation, while Simchas Torah in Tishrei celebrates Torah drawn down and lived within the world.
